Getting a Canister filter for christmas for my 90g.

I have 20 African Cichlids and a pleco with two penguin 350's filters.
Looking for a canister that will keep my water crystal clear.

Any sugestions between the two brands ?

While ehiem makes a great canister, I would stay with your 2 penguins and get 1-2 hot mag 250's with the micron cartridge for water polishing then. That is assuming you are willing to add to what you have and not replace.

As for interior designer speak to the wife !
Nuff said... That palm tree...uggghhh...:lipssealedsmilie:

some texas holey rock, go vertical with some rocks... I'm more "au naturale" for the fish..looks more REAL

Keep your current filtration and look into adding the Rena XP3 filter. Great for the price and does a great job. When I was doing the research it was between the Eheim and the Rena XP series.

I found a Tetra Diatomagic filter going for $25 barely used in my local online classifieds. If the filter could use any diatomaceous powder, it would have been a deal - not otherwise because it's discontinued. Anyhow, look for deals like that maybe? HOT Magnums do go cheap sometimes used (or even new) on AquaBid and such, and that micron cartridge does the job better than any filter floss ever could.

I would still say to get a canister filter though, you're going to need massive amounts of bio filtration when these fish get full grown. And I'm with most everyone else here, there's no real need to spend extra on premium canisters like Eheims and Marineland when Renas work just as well. I've even had good luck with Penn Plax canisters and they are cheaper yet.

Where you should really spend the money is in the media - I'm a big fan of Seachem's Matrix (the biological media, not the carbon)

Ok, if you are looking to replace both filters, I personally think Eheim is the way I would go unless you are willing to spend a lot. I have had both and I have Magnums right now.

I LOVE the Magnum H.O.T. 250s vs the typical cartridge H.O.T. options. But I would think you would need 2 on a tank that size.

I also love the FX5. If you want an all-in-one great solution from, the Magnum FX5 is incredible. A friend has two. One was on a 110 and one on a 115. He set them up and hasn't touched them in 8-9 months. They purge themselves daily etc. They have water polishing pads etc. They are the luxury version. They also have a luxury price tag. I think the price tag is down on them now, but they are still over $300.

The 350 I have just got retired for a Fluval. I hated my 350. Don't mess with Fluvals if anyone recommends them. I have a 204 and 405. The 204 is getting replaced by a Magnum HOT 250 soon. They are so noisy and problematic in comparison it isn't worth the frustration.

The thing I like about Eheim is that in my experience they are the easiest to work on, most reliable and they seem to ALWAYS be quite. What more could you ask for?

You can always use a Vortex Diatom filter for polishing. I love them. Great when you have an ick outbreak too...
