Lots of people pay thousands of dollars for exotic or purebred cats, dogs, birds & other pets that they have no intention of breeding. Though it's fish, it's still a pet. The enjoyment they derive from watching them, some even petting their fish, is worth the price they pay for it. No need to yield a return other than fish poop. Now, if only I can get my livebearers to stop giving me monthly interest..
That said, my costliest was a $2 molly (50% off sale). All others were freebies (people moving, end of school class fish, monthly interest). I sure enjoy my $2 fishies.
I'm glad you enjoy him, and I think he's neat too but ... $35 for a mantis shrimp?!?!
I think I've heard of people paying more than that to have them removed from reef tanks!
(You should know that I remember when damsels were $2, clown triggers were $100 (cheaper now!) and it was tough to find any tang or angel that couldn't be bought for <$35. I think, back than, the few mantis shrimp I saw go through the LFS were $5-$7.)
Most I ever spent on fish was 8.99 for a Ram. I walked around the LFS for almost an hour trying to decide whether or not I wanted to spend that much money. I know, I'm cheap.
Same here. The most I've spent was $10 on my ram. At first I was hesitant to spend that much money (there was no guarantee so if it had died I would have been mad) but my ram is so pretty that he was worth all the money spent on him.
