I just got a new 75 gallon off craigslist on friday. Yay! Anyways, it came with his entire setup, including 3 filters. He had it pretty heavily stocked (or at least it seemed that way to me, but I don't know much about what he was keeping, so...) with 6 cichlids, 8 tetras, a pretty darn big pleco, and a pearlscale goldfish....he said even with all this, the filters managed to keep his water super clean and clear (obviously with water changes as well). Now, we took all this home, and set it all up, and the two sponge filters worked, and the 2 powerheads worked, but we couldn't get the HOB filter to start. We assembled it and it wouldn't go. So we tried to pull the tubey part back out and look at it, but the rotor is now stuck at the bottom and will only rotate in one circle and then it stops (we tried pushing it with our fingers to see if it would move at all). We worked for probably a good 2 hours on this thing, but we just can't get it to work. The mechanical bits of fish keeping confuse me (honestly, a T.V. remote confuses me!) and my boyfriend doesn't research as much about these things like I do, so we are both just at a loss. Is there a way we can fix this? Or is our filter done for? We have 2 fancy goldfish in their right now (just little fellas), and we want to get 3 more of a similar size (yes, I realize they will grow). Will the sponge filters be enough to filter this thing, or should I get a new HOB filter? I know that I do NOT want a canister. How much power would I need and what models do you guys recommend? Thanks!

Also, we are new to sponge filters, so any tips you guys have on those and their maintenance is much appreciated. :)

I had that same thing happen to me recently with my HOB filter. I honestly know how to fix it. All I know is I popped it apart 3 times and kept putting it back together and it worked. I'm guessing there's just something with the way those paddles fit in that is precarious. Keep disassembling and reassembling and moving it around and it should work eventually. At least mine eventually did and it was doing exactly what yours was.

See we tried that.....it's just not working. We fiddled with the darn thing for 2 hours, lining up the little rod part and everything. I just.....GRRRR! I hate technology, but it hates me more.

How about a pic of the filter in question....

what do you want pictures of? I can try my best.

Get a pic of the piece you're having trouble with. Maybe there is a gasket or something missing

I don't know what the film on top of the water is. That's new as of today. Probably from letting it sit for 3 days? :uhoh:

Oh and it says it's an aquatech 30-60.

This thing looks absolutely disgusting. But I know it's got a lot of his bacteria in it, so I'd like to try and salvage it if I can. I mean, I still have the sponge filters and the sand is his, so I'm sure there's still tons, but every little bit helps, right?
