Fire belly newts..?

Well, since I have not gotten any Newts this year, I did stumble on some RES, so I turned my 55 gallon sw tank into a res tank. well, I picked up one of those 501 turtle filters, and I have problems of it constantly clogging. This may work well for a newt or frog tank but I advise against anything larger or with heavy bio loads.

Still hoping for a newt tank next year. I have plenty of 10 gallons unless I start to breed my leopard geckos.

Does anyone have any updates on their newt tanks?

I have a 10 gallon newt tank with 2 newts, a ramshorn snail, and a fire belly toad in it. I've had them about 6 months and all is well. I use a fluval submersible filter, no heater, and a plant bulb to grow a bunch of plants (some attached to driftwood from petco, anachris, red melon sword, java moss, etc. I just added the anachris a few weeks ago and the newts love to play in it--it's not anchored, just floats. I have had no problems with aggression between the toad and the newts, they leave each other alone. They eat frozen bloodworms 2-3 times a week. Sometimes they eat and sometimes they don't, works better if I feed every 2 days instead of every other day. I have a gravel built up and a nice pagoda stone to create land area. My newts spend virtually all their time in the water. They also like to hide underneath the filter. I hope to post a picture later, trying to get my husband to help with the digital camera.

I have 2 red bellied newts in a river tank setup with a male betta and two adfs in the water part. I use a 10 gallon sponge filter in the water, which is only about 2-3 gallons total. This is a 5 gallon tank with a platform that has substrate and plants on it.

The newts NEVER go in the water and spend the evenings up in the plants... they seem to love to climb up in them. They eat FD tubifex worms and live black worms...I have also started adding some flightless fruitflies to thier diet.

I've had them for almost a year now and they seem to be doing very well. I believe I have a male and female, though I have never observed any courting behavior.

I've also just set up another viverium for my G&B auratus dart frog. He was in a 5 gallon..so I just gave him a bit more room..uped him to a 10. I was bored today and needed something to do..lol. :D

LOL, I just did the same today almost, got another leopard gecko boy very pretty, soon to have pictures. But I picked up the Exo-Terra Glass Terrarium 12"x12"x12" by Hagen. I am going to use this as a grow out for the new male that I have and then probably turn this either into a tree frog or Anole setup. I actually like these cages and wanted to give them a try. Now I got the smaller one, it was on sale and it was a good deal.

Jackie, what kind of Newts do you have and where did you get them? That is if you live in the Twin Cities area. I have looked all over and could not find any this past summer.

I am a Minnesota transplant living in the Boston, MA area so I can't help you. We are hoping to move next summer to MN, so I will be a Minnesotagal again. When we move, we will drive, so perhaps if you can't find any newts I could bring you a couple. I have Chinese fire belly newts, I can usually find those and paddle tail newts at the LFS.

Hey guys, sorry to bring up an old post but this is my setup.

I have 1 firebelly newt and 1 paddletail and 2 firebelly toads, and 1 Southern toad, all int he same 20L tank.

I hear you guys saying the toads and newts might not get along but mine seem to get along great.

I have had the firebelly newts for 10 years!

I often find my newts sitting on my toads and visa versa, they don't seem to cause each other any problems. THey are like best friends. I even cought one of my toads with his arms wrapped around the newt doing it's mating bark...

My newts spend most of their time in the water and my toads spend most of their time on land, but they all seem to get along rather well.

My only concern is with the souther toad, he is getting big, but no problems yet.

Right now I'm trying ot figure out if flourite is ok to use in there with the newts. I guess I will give it a shot.

Well, as long as everyone seems to be getting along fine, I guess go with it...but that sitting on each other could very well be an aggression thing.

I know that in dartfrogs that is how they show aggression. One will climb ontop of another and try to drown them if water is available to do it. If not, the stress alone will kill the weaker one eventually.

Well they both ake turns sittin on each other, Usualy one jsut puts it's arm around the other one, unless they are trying to mate.

But what I'm really concerned with right now, is if I can use fluorite for the substrate in the water for my newts...I read they should have big round gravel so large they can't eat it...Well my newts are pretty big so I would imagine they could eat the stuff I have (regular blue gravel) if they wanted to, but I have never had a problem with that for over 10 years.

Also I have feed them 90% blackworms since I first got them, the blackworms stay alive in the gravel and they hunt around for them. Sometimes I don't have to feed them for a week! I just keep an eye on it. So I'm wondering if fluorite is going to be bad for them since they tend to dig a bit in the larger blue gravel for worms.

Hey no problem for bringing back this thread.. its a good one filled with lots of info.

To answer some of your questions, If they are fine and been that way for awhile, then keep it that way. If they are all eating fine and no one is starving, that is good.

Now the next thing, I think Flourite should be fine but if you are afraid of using that, try onyx sand. Its smaller and rounder and shouldn't give you any problems. Post some picts here, a before and after shot maybe but we would love to see pictures of your tank. Best of luck and thanks for posting here.
