fish go into shock whenever light is turned on

Mine are at the very bottom of the tank and stay there unless they are eating...so I am pretty curious as well.

hmmm...well i don't know what that is. do they show any other signs of illness?

How the fish react if lights are turned on gradually? I mean, open curtains then put a room light on then put the tank light on? Is it always as soon as the aquarium lights go on?

Ive got moonlights on a timer than come on an hour before my main lights, then go off an hour after they are on. Same when they are switching off.

Try offering your fish lots of hiding places and see how they react.

no, its always the same crazy reaction when the light is introduced gradually. I might consider hiding places for them, or i might never ever turn the aquarium lights on again. the stress of it can't be good for them.

White stringy feces can be a sign of internal parasites, as can wasting away, flashing, listlessness, and refusing or spitting out food.

I treated my fish with PraziPro (a praziquantel med by Hikari) mixed with frozen mysis shrimp for a week or so, and then with Metronidazole mixed with the shrimp for a week or so. Also put some PraziPro in the water column. Other options are to use Panacur (a horse dewormer), Levamisole, or an already medicated food (Jungle Labs makes one.) Panacur has a broader range of parasites it will treat (such as camallanus), but is harder to readily find than praziquantel. These meds, BTW, should not impact your biofilter, and are not harmful to invertebrates.

I'm not an expert, though, so I'd recommend doing some searching and reading on fish illness to confirm signs and symptoms, and rule out all possibilities.

its all so hard! i mean, stuff like spitting out food and flashing isn't something you would really notice...i'm at my wits end

ok, ok, i've calmed down now, so this is my plan:

i'm gonna watch the fish for a few days and observe them closely
research stuff about internal infections on the internet
and TAKE ACTION (if action is needed to be action)

Where could I go about finding the one made by Hikari? I don't think Petsmart stocks it. Have you heard anything about the Jungle Labs one?

define 'flashing' and listlessness for me please

Flashing is essentially scratching against objects like rocks and decor. Listlessness would be hanging out in one place all the time, rather than swimming around as normal.
