Fish Shed Build Thread!

I went ahead and made a ghetto little filter... I'll start a new thread for that.

Thanks for the responses! It's all pleasure right now, although I sure wouldn't mind some profit after all the coin I've sunk into this! I do like seeing fish breed, and if I can sell some to pay for the upkeep, great! Also it's great to have extra fish to trade to other fishkeepers for their excess stock.

i wish i had the space for a fish room! next house will have a nice big room for fish tanks :)

I like your stands interesting designs!

Yeah yr shelveing is pretty cool, I'm breeding geo braziliensis right now and need more space. Keep up the good work

Sorry, no updates for a while.

Had a small disaster. The hose nozzle leaked, into my 45 that it was draped over, killing 3 out of 4 of my really nice angels, and making a huge puddle on the floor. That sucked.

I'm pretty broke right now, so there hasn't been much progress, no new fish. But I did set up my trio of N. Multifasciatus in their own 20long. I think I need some dithers in there though, cuz I never see them with all the shells.

Sorry to hear about the troubles, thanks for the update and I hope things turnaround for you. Fish wise and being broke, problems many of us are experienced in. Good luck and thanks for the thread. Continuing to hang out.

Do you have any idea how much it costs for electric? What are you going to do in the winter for heat?
Also do you have any lfs that you can sell fish to? I have three that buy guppys, shrimp and snails. It was hard to get 'cash' from them at first (they all want to give credit) but once they see you have good stuff, they will.
Good luck

Electricity, haven't figured it out yet, but it's not much. The AC only runs in the afternoon(timer) and then only when its hot (thermostat). The air pump is only 46 watts I think, that's like 3$/month, water is negligible, it goes to the garden anyways. Lights are only on when I'm in there. For the winter, I have a floor heater, 1500/750watts, I'll probably keep it on low, and set a timer to only have it come on at night. The skylights, which are now mostly covered, provide a good bit of heat from the sun during the day, and let out very little heat, being triple pane. The whole thing is insulated to approx. R20 and containing a large volume of water, it stays fairly stable temp wise.

SO to sum it all up: my monthly beer money far exceeds the utilities cost for the shed.

I'm not selling anything yet as I don't have enough breeding going on. Can't even get bloody convicts to raise a batch of fry. I do know at least one store that will be willing to take my fish though, probably for store credit, which is fine, I'll just get more fish. Also CL around here is pretty good for fish.

Nice setups! I can't wait to give a try at something like this in the future. Sucks to hear about the leak though...

Btw, you shouldn't need any dither for multies. They'll feel comfortable eventually...more shells always helps IMO.

Hi
The electric rates in CA must be cheap, because here in NJ the air would add $6 per month. It costs me more in the summer to heat because my fish room is in the basement, in the winter the heating pipes keep the room warm.
When I was raising convicts they did better when there were other convicts in the tank, they seem to bond when they have to defend their eggs/fry.
Good luck. Can you post updated pics?
