AHA! another post is coming.
Well, any of you guys who followed my other thread about my sick EBJD
http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?260771-Worried-about-my-juvie-Jack-Dempsey will know that he passed away on Saturday night, really worked hard with the little guy and just couldn't do enough. So here I am all bummed out, and planning on waiting a good long time for another JD (i know right?) and my wife gets up on Sunday and asks if we can do something adventurous. I'm thinking mleh and so she suggests a big fish store down in the city a couple hours south of here. So, I figure "why not" and off we go to visit some fishes. Once we're there I was looking through their SA cichlids and a guy comes over and asks if he can help, I say "mind if I see your JDs? just out of curiosity. He starts laughing and walks me over to about a 75 gallon tank that has 5 huge bala sharks, 2 large silver dollars, 2 adult green terrors and an adult 5 star general...oh yeah and in the bottom corner there is about a 3.5" JD....without a tail. So while we're talking about the fish and looking at his tail the owner comes over, hears us talking and says "this fish is dead here cause I don't have anywhere else for him and he's dead at most people's homes...I'll give him to you for $3" :headshake2:.
You guessed it.
Bob:
Bob has a HUGE appatite and although somewhat skittish is actually quite healthy, I'm seeing some filament in the stump of a tail so I'm hoping he gets at least some back. But after loosing Jack and talking to Jeta I'd decided that come hell or high water I was going to get a TOUGH, SURVIVOR of a JD . This fish is hard to kill.
So, while sorting out where he was going to land I decided to re-arrange the top shelf of my stand and move the Beta into the old 10g and put the 20h up there to grow out Bob a bit in. So, while shuffling things around I realized I was 1 filter short for the 10g. So I went out in the shop and dug through everything I could find and came up with a powerhead and a media container for a Magnum 250 (Bob is shredding a crypt right now) that just so happened to fit together perfectly and here is what went down.
Parts

Powerhead

I love it when things just fit together

Put a little media in, You can see where it was just bypassing at first...needed to be packed down.

Cut up an old fishkeeping rag (means it doesn't get washed with detergent and has spent a significant amount of time underwater the material is a microfiber chamois type.)

Plugged the top of the center tube so that water doesn't shoot right through

Here it is running, the power head is underwater and the canister is out. If you look closely you can see the flow and you can see that the water travels all the way through the media (trust me I watched it) quite evenly and up out the top.
And here is Mr. Beta's new digs, filtered with the crazy filter...please note, both of the tanks that I switched got the same substrate with enough added to accommodate the larger footprints (new on bottom old on top) and none of the filters went dry. I even used the water from the old tanks to fill what I could of the new tanks. So they aren't uncycled tanks....they're insanely seeded.
Also, the crazy filter polished the water on this 10g in about half an hour. pretty nuts.
And here is the whole shebang...I need to redo the wiring...again :rant2: and I need to cover up the lighting on the sides...but it doesn't look as bad as I expected.
I can't stop laughing at myself...I am RIDICULOUS.
Seriously I think I need therapy.:screwy:
