That's what I thought about the barbels. But in some fish it's more a sex determinate as to barbel length. Some barbs come to mind right now.

Fat fish are healthy happy fish! Yours are not obese like some overeaters can be, just "filling out" in a good way.

But yeah. I do round out what they eat as well, offer spirulina flakes once a week, mostly insect based foods. They are good eaters, but have to compete with the harlies and barbs, plus the 20 loaches in with them too lol

Yeah, I have some "good eater" corys too. Not just females, the males are a bit rotund too, if in a smaller way, lol. Veggie food or more protien rich, they just like it all! I've had barbs, SAEs, tetras etc. like that too. I put some of that down to boredom, they don't have much else to do beside eat & not much competetion. Wild fish eat as often as they can but our fish are spoiled with daily (or more!) meals

It is interesting to see these guys change from being confused with SAE to being clearly different. No black stripe going all the way through the tail and the orange eye marking make it clear they cannot be SAE. I got stuck with flying foxes in my first attempt to purchase SAE. I would have liked it better if II had gotten your fish. I finally got the real SAE. For a number of years I have kept the Sahyadria denisonii aka redline barb aka roseline shark etc.

I have found some of the barbs to be great for inducing schooling in tetras. The barb is big enough to be seen as a threat but is really not. However, the tetras still school.

I hope you are able to acquire a few more.

p.s. I use an old digicam for pictures. I do not own a smart phone and never have. After seeing the pictures you get with your iPhone I am tempted to get one just to use as a camera.

I use a Samsung s20, an android phone. Has pretty decent camera, do recommend for the camera function who needs to use a phone to call people???

Itd be awesome to find more of these guys, theyre really neat little fish.

If my area actually got SAE, I'd look in shipments of them for mix ins of those, but alas they don't sell SAE here. We have to order them online.

I've never even seen the flying foxes here. These guys are apparently more commonly confused with flying foxes too, so would have been good to check those, but again... lol

Only "algae eaters" we get here are the notorious Chinese algae eaters. Which are neat fish, but not ideal for most setups and aren't really algae eaters as adults.
Frankly, neither are garra haha. But either way I like them as they are, didn't want them for any functional purpose.

I do have a flip phone to make calls. I do not text and the phone is turned off over 95% of the time. I use it when I am away from home in case in need to call somebody including help if I break down. One the other hand I got my first PC in 1987 when folks used DOS.

If we go back in time to when I did my first live plants, it was late 2001 or early 2002. Back then live -plants were just starting to become more ubiquitous in the hobby. So as most folks did, I had algae issues and SAE were one way folks dealt with this. It took most of us some time to learn how to avoid algae instead of having to remove it.

But I am happy I had SAEs for their value in keeping my schoolers schooling

I'm with 2tank on the lame flip phone, lol, I think I've said. In the olden days SAE were uncommon, flying foxes not as much. But from what I remember g. cambodiensis were sometimes mixed in. Taken yesterday during dinner time. This one's the smaller of the two. Both have nice coloring getting nicer every day. Definitely territorial with one another. Will benefit having more space once they're a wee bit more larger.

I've had to separate them because the bigger one is a bully, but they've been doing well separate.

In fact, the smaller guy is really happy among my rainbowfish and cories in my 55. He's been thriving and getting along so well with them.




Big guy is a bit of a brute, I've caught him chasing the hoplo cats a couple times, but seems fairly minor thus far. Something I'm monitoring.
