Glo-Fish = Danios

Painted Glass fish are not bred to look like that, they are wild type fish that have been painfully injected with dyes under their scales.

Blood parrots are hybrid cichlids (I have had mine for almost 8 years) who have parents that mated in captivity but normally would not have (similar to a horse and a donkey mating to produce a mule). There are Jelly Bean Convicts which are not dyed - they have been bred to have the rounded shape which is how they got their name. But the name Jelly bean cichlid has also been used to described the dyed varieties also -- SO, not all jelly beans are dyed. Another common name for these dyed fish is bubble gum parrot.

Actually, the pic that Lupin posted is a Jelly Bean Convict - bred to have that shape, not typically the ones dyed. The dyed ones are most often (but not always!) pale Blood Parrots - not Jelly Bean Convicts.

ow acid bath, what does that do sorry for the noob questions

There are a couple of different methods. For an all over dye, like the dyed parrot cichlids, very often they remove the slime coat with an acid wash and then dip the fish in concentrated dye. Another common method for "painted" fish is to inject the dye through the scales and underlying tissue (but the diameter of the needle to the fish would be like a human getting a shot with a needle the diameter of a pencil). Finally, some fish are actually tattooed - basically the same procedure as human tattoos.

lesser28, how do you know so much about this dirty bussiness? (suspicious), lol im jk, thanks for the great information!

:evil_lol: hmmm, wouldn't you like to know???

But seriously, I got really interested because I have had my blood parrot for so long and I wanted to learn more about the fish, in the process ran into all of this info about the horrible things done. And, it also happens that about 3 moths ago my daughter fell in love with the glofish at my LFS, and again had to investigate... What can I say, trained as a scientist I never can just let a question go:)

i read about it in a book on how they die. it sounds terrible. dont buy the dyed fish bcuz it supports the cruelty
