i no i will get teased for saying this but
i for one, think they are GREAT i have about 8 of them and about 8 zebra danios and they all mix around togheter. for those of you who think that they are "scary". I have to say that they are magnificant, its great they are awesome.
but that is only my opinion

People, sigh, they are just fish. I dont know about you, but I drive a hook through both lips of the common minnow and use him for bait. I had a tuna sandwich for lunch yesterday. We make dolphins and orcas jump through hoops for our entertainment and make them live in tiny concrete pools. We slaughter sharks for their fins and make soup out of them. Do I advocate animal cruelty for eating tuna sandwiches, fishing, or going to Seaworld? Maybe to some. Not to me. Why? Because we are on the top of the food chain. Most intelligent of all animals. Good God. Sparking a debate about something this mundane is waste of time. Once an animal is genetically engineered, it can be patented and marketed just like any product. Its no longer natural, its man made, just like plastic or coca-cola classic. It used to be a natural product, but now its not. Boo-hoo. Like other posters have stated, corn, wheat, tomatoes, chickens, etc. All no longer natural. Processed and patent-pending. Its the nature of the beast. If you cannot cope with the "tampering" of genetic material for the advancement/knowledge of mankind, then I suggest you get a mule and go live in the mountains. Just dont come down and ask for modern medicine when you come down with malaria or rocky mountain fever or that new avian-bird flu thats going around. :cool2:

i bought my glofish simply for the bright red color. There is no freshwater fish with the exception of a few select breed guppies that can rival such vivid color. They look awesome swimming around, you see zaps of red trail going by since they swim so fast.

They are also the most hardy fish ever, one was stuck in my ugf for at least a day and survived without a scratch! Not a single glofish were lost during my newbie mistakes and cycling.

ps i didnt buy into the whole glow under dark bs, they do not glow (at least not mine). I just like the deep red color, looks nice in an aquarium.

glofish is one of my favorite

From those pictures, the name glofish seems a bit of a misnomer-- they don't look like they glow at all. But I don't really see anything wrong with them since the fish weren't hurt in any way, and I have no qualms with genetic engineering. There seems to be concern about their being released in the wild, but I think that's more a problem of the facility that breeds them rather than the actual fish themselves. *shrug*

I have a Glofish and I love him, personally. I bought him before I even knew they were genetically modified. He schools with my other six danios just fine, although they do pick on him a bit more than any of the others. Poor guy.

And on the tangent about goldfish . . .

Do any of you who dislike "fancy" goldfish for being "freaks" have a chihuahua? A shih tzu? Bichon? Pug? Really, the principles behind breeding these technically "useless" dogs (as compared to, say, shepherds, terriers, hunting dogs, etc) and fancy goldfish are basically the same. Someone enjoyed the way a certain trait looked and wanted to perfect it in their future companions. It's just how humans are by nature: Selfish. So what if pugs have trouble breathing properly and ryukin have a lot of swimbladder problems--Man, they look good!

I am completely against dyed fish, however. The reasons should be obvious, so I won't yammer about the same things everyone else has.

I just saw the red danios at the LFS today and I dont really think the colors look that good, they kind of look like faded male cherry barbs.

lol.. it seems mother nature still holds some trump cards/... for now...
but the fact that the companies that made these fish also are research centers for gene therepy (and other stuff) means to me that it would be a great thing to go buy,
on the other hand i like the look of 'wild' fish... i wish that i had some wild angels, the natural look of things seems to be best
