Goldfish Babies

They're still in there and they keep getting bigger. I've added around 50-60 new babies so far from the second spawn. Wish I knew how many of them there are.. that would be nice to know. But, not worth disturbing them to take a count.

Planning to do a big water change in the main tank tomorrow. So I'll have to lift the breeder net out to sit in a basin since the water level will get too low for them to stay there. I'm still finding unhatched eggs and new fry in the tank that are at the one or two day old stage. So I'm going to leave the substrate undisturbed completely and cover the end of the python tube with a brine shrimp net as I pull out some water.

In the last two days, I've bought three 30-gallon tanks and one 20-gallon tank off Craigslist for around $160 total. (But I also have more goldfish coming, in addition to what I have already.) Will have to move a lot of furniture and boxes around once I figure out where to set them up.

Some fry pics looking into the net from above. I really miss seeing them up close from that little glass.

Those new fish tanks aren't going to help a whole lot. Here's why -- a little preview of some new goldies I'll be getting in a few weeks. Two red orandas, a white/red wakin, a crown pearlscale, and a black ranchu. That wakin is the only one who can mix in with the comets/fantails... but I still have other empty tanks to set up, as well.

I've never seen a black ranchu before -- very pretty!

Here's a cute video of some younger ones..

The one I'm getting is mature -- around 7 inches long now. It has such a sweet face. They gave two other views, so those are attached.

If you get some wakins or something liek that out of them, and your feeling generous, let me know how much shipping is to me? lol

oh my gosh that black ranchu is the most adorable thing i have ever seen in my life

I received bad news last night about the black ranchu. When Steve was handling the fish getting them prepped to ship in a few days, he discovered a kidney-sized tumor at the base of the ranchu's tail. I'm not going to be able to get him after all, which just breaks my heart. I will be getting a chocolate oranda that I didn't mention before because I don't have a photo to show you. (Didn't mind about the photo... I know the seller now, he knows what appeals to me, and he offered a nice price.)

On a brighter note, I got real lucky with two of my bids at the Goldfish Connection. It's a fortune for me to spend on two fish, of course.. but mine barely held on at the end.. so I'm getting them both. In that league any successful bid among show people and breeders is a great thing. I was in way over my head.. but am very happy. So I'll also be getting a gorgeous red ranchu (planning to name it Morka, which means apricot in Lithuanian) and a very unique silvery/lavender/chocolate ryukin broadtail (which I'm planning to name Remington for what seems to be a distinctive gunmetal cast to his/her coloring).

I spent some time working out names for everyone else... finally. So just skip over the list here if goldfish names don't interest you.

Red/white oranda - Khepri which is Egyptian for "emerging sun."
Red/white/black oranda - Cinder for that fiery/glowing/ember appearance.
Chocolate oranda (not shown) - Rémy. Well, because it's brown and I like Rémy Martin cognac. Good enough. lol.
White/Red wakin - Akira after Japanese filmmaker Akria Kurosawa.
Red/white crown pearlscale - Katja.. I don't know, because it's cute and needs a cute name.

You all know more than enough about Alexei, Sprocket, Sparkplug (coming soon), Cassandra, and Chiffon... so they just get a mention. But I've also named my other two goldies now that have been unnamed for way too long. There's also an all-white (metallic) comet named Sibelius, after the Finnish composer. He's shown up a few times in the mix of photos I've posted of the others.

Red oranda - Sekani which means to laugh in Egyptian... because this suits his personality.
Calico fantail - Sachi which means blessed or lucky in Japanese. She's the other calico seen so often with Cassandra.

Okay.. that's about it for updates to my goldfish family in general. Nothing new to report really about the goldfish fry. They're still doing great and growing all the time.

sounds great! so your getting flaringshutter's sparkplug too? she is making room. at least they are going (and at) a very loving home! congrads.
let me know if you want to give away a wakin if you get one in the fry.

Yes.. and yes, I'll let everyone know. It doesn't make any sense for me to keep more than one or two of the offspring. Assuming they survive.. I'll need to find homes for all the babies I can as soon as they're old enough. We'll all get to see what types they grow into and how the colors develop. I'll post individual fish pics for everyone to see. You guys have all been here through the process, so you'll get to pick and choose whichever fish you want. As long as someone has an established pond or suitable tank ready in a few months when they're old enough for shipping... it'll just cost you the charges for Fedex overnight or 2-day delivery.

I will cull any fish that's obviously (to me) deformed or underdeveloped. If I get anything that's show or breeder quality (assuming I'd be able to even tell that as I have no experience assessing a young fish's potential against ideal show standards), I might ask if a real goldfish distributor wants to sell them or auction them off. But I doubt that would lead anywhere, those guys bring in fish by the boatload directly from established breeders in China several times a year... what would they want with a home-grown specimen, regardless how pretty it looks or how healthy it appears to be? All sentimentality aside, the practical side of me knows most of these fish will either end up culled or shuffled off to a local fish store's feeder tank. I might be able to rehome a few fish on Craigslist.. but I doubt that would amount to many of them. They'd still probably end up being fed to a big snake or fish.
