Goldfish laid eggs - with photos, etc.

As always flaring nice shots. You just keep adding to my complex about my inferior photo taking skills with this thread. I can hardly pick up a camera now.... sniffle.

Sprocket is going to grow up to be orange with white fin tips. I guess daddy has the dominant coloration genes (go daddy). That brown color fades to the gold color in a few months. It always amazes me how quickly it happens. My little comet with the black mohawk(the ugly one) has lost 1/2 of his black in the past two weeks. dang.

Aw guys, don't feel bad! Like I said, I spend 5-6 days a week behind the camera. I get a lot of practice.

The black background does help. Manual focus is also a great addition. And the finepix is a fabulous camera. I recommend those quite a lot.

I was figuring he'd end up orange with white. Most of his bronze coloration has an orange underlay - you can see it at the very end of his tail fins. He looks a lot like Napoleon at that age:

I am hoping that the black fading along his back turns into permanent black patches, though. It's not likely, but we'll see.

Since I moved Sprocket out of the nursery tank, Sparkplug has grown at least 50% and little Bracket has started to turn a pale gold. Hooray! And the little brigs that hatched just before the goldfish are starting to lay! I caught the girls laying their first two clutches.

lol i am glad to hear my camera is nice, i inherited it when my grandfather, a great wildlife photographer, recently died. I do need to read more about it, im an animation major so i have definitley taken plenty of art classes and understand 3 point lighting, and atmospheric perspective, your shots are just amazingly crisp! I just need to learn how to manipulate the camera better.

back to the point of the thread, even after reading it I am contuinually impressed with your ability to breed fish, it is something I truly plan on doing within my tanks but am waiting to be sure i know what im doing.

I also commend your documentation through photos and posts of this process, definitley worthy of the sticky but also is a guide for any breeder.

thanks again for sharing all your success with the forum.

Bit of an update.

Well, say goodbye to little Fender, who died last night. He had stopped growing, and as I mentioned earlier, I was worried about him. Last night I found the snails eating the last bits of him. Very sad. He had such nice markings, such a sweet little guy, but I think there were internal problems.

On the bright side, I moved Sparkplug to the big tank, and little Sprocket and Sparkplug are getting along famously with their parents. Sprocket is comfortable enough with the big fish to even school with them a little now! It's adorable. Sprocket has also oranged-up quite a bit and his black patches have deepened.

Photos! I'm amazed at how bright they are! It's nice to have little yellow Sparkplug in the tank, with all the deep orange and white of the big fish.

Hooray! Little Bracket will be next to move. Then the inhabitants of the 5 gallon will move to the 10 gallon, which I will be planting. We'll play musical tanks. :D

A bit of an update.

I finally transferred the last little guy into the big tank, little Bracket, the baby whom I found under the filter. Little survivor... until he was transferred.
When I checked on the tank the next day, he was nowhere to be found. I don't know if he was just small enough for the big fish to think he was food, or what. I can't say. But he's gone. :(

The other two babies are growing really fast... it's unbelievable. Little Sparkplug has colored up a ton. All his black markings are very dark now, even darker than the last photo I posted. On the left side, he's got a very dark patch around his eye, which is bright blue. Very unusual and gorgeous. I'm thrilled that the two babies that made it thus far are so pretty.

Since I had planned the space for Bracket and he's no longer with us, I decided to order a baby watonai from raingarden. I've been eyeing their watonia for months and he finally put up a new batch. They're a bit pricey but I would love to have one and soon, with the new tank coming, I will have some more room.
This one is the one I requested, if you're curious:

That's all the news for now. My last six wild-color brigs will be going to a new home today and the 10 gallon nursery will be coming down. Fiance is happy about that. I'm sad. Why is it that we fishy people always end up with someone who isn't such a fish fan? Curses. Ah well.

aww poor little fender. I read the whole thing just now very nice pictures and story. I was really rooting for the little guy. Are you sure he isn't under a filter again? :grinyes:

wow what an amazing thread flaring shutter that was the best read ive had for a long time thanks.
i visited here because i just got my first two goldfish for 15 years i got them for my girlfriends 8 year old daughter i and she loves them :) i got a complete mis-match being a fish newby they are a shibunkin about 3 inches long and a black moors (big bubble eyes) about an inch and a half long in a 30 litre tank lo and behold only had them 5 days they have been playing chase and bump for the last 2 days and eggs everywhere :/
i kept goldfish when i was a kid and never had this happen before i scooped about 50 eggs out into a tub of water and was searching the net to see how you could hatch them but after reading this thread of how hard it is i might just put them back in the main tank could these eggs be fertilised??

wow what an amazing thread and great pics. not much else i can add to the comments of others but i must say i am well impressed.
