Good Beginner Beer

Those light beers still facilitate alcoholism without all the weight gain.

true but it still never faills to see a person lugging around a keg, and drinkin a light beer.

My advise don't drink, I'm 47 haven't drank for over 15 yrs., since you have never drank a beer then don't worry about what your missing. Kind of like someone thinking about starting drugs, if you never try them you'll never be a drug addict, if you never drink you'll never be an alcoholic. I would never tell someone that drinking was O.K., what makes a person an alcoholic is the first or second drink. As a Christian I work for a Dr. who also a Decon at our Church, our Church had/stated had a rule that if you drank then you could not be a Decon. The Doctor said it wasn't biblical and that it was stupid rules and if he couldn't have a beer every night then he said he'd quit the Church, to say the least the Church changed it's regulations and he is now one of the Decons at our Church. This is coming from a person who was in the Air Force, a place where you could not have the hair touch your ears, had to dress a certain way and follow rules that weren't biblical. I'm upset that the Church changed it's rules just to fit one person!, and to me when someone has to have a beer every night to go to sleep then yes there is a drinking problem, very much.
Drinking leads to alot of things that can cause alot of physical and emotional problems. It's a personal choice, I did it only to fit in when I was a young adult, grew up eventually and realized that if I have to drink to fit in with a certain group of people then they weren't worth fitting into after all.
No I'd say don't drink,---water, tea, juices, milk and other healthier drinks are better for you and won't lead to other things.

what makes a person an alcoholic is the first or second drink.

I disagree. An alcoholic is an alcoholic before they ever have a drink. Alcoholics typically have a predisposition for their problem. Usually an alcoholic has an addictive personality and when they give up drinking another addiction usually takes over such as...over eating, caffeine, cigarettes...etc. Beer does not cause alcoholism.

you are only an alcoholic when you drink for the sole purpose of getting drunk, almost every day.

Late on the thread! Oops... but i <3 beer. My b/f and I consider ourselves "Beer Enthusiasts" we are out there! Just like your wine fanatics- there are beer fanatics! And I am more than happy to answer any questions you have about beer! lol.

To start off, there are valid reasons NOT to drink. But you can drink responsibly. I generally get beer and drink at home with the b/f or when friends are over- we love to bring over new beers to try! I either have a cab or a friend drive me home from local brewries or beer festivals, and I dont drink more than once a week, and I attempt not to get drunk. (Been there done that, now I just enjoy the beer)

I once drank only zima and margaritas... I made the leap into beer hood with GOOD BEER.

For GOOD REAL beer, not mass-produced, in-it-for-the-money-not-the-beer beer is either a widmere heff or pyramid heff. Heff is a good starter beer because it is a wheat beer (and we are all familiar with wheat) and has citrus flavor added to it. Yum! From there you can move on to malt, barley, or hoppier (Hops are for the REAL beer mongers- i dont like hop beers, but the b/f does so I've tried a few) beers, but the WHEAT beers are a good starter.

Go for anything with wheat. I personally dont like the yellow, lighter beers because they are a bit watery, even the local brewed lighter beers- I go for amber-ish in color. If you have a wheat beer, it will be a bit cloudy- that is good! ;) Try adding a squeeze of fresh lemmon to them!

Blue Moon is decent, but it's produced by Coors.... I consider it a beer that is only good for people's first step outside of the nasty mass-produced beer, Blue Moon is a baby step for people to get away from Coors, Miller, Bud etc.... I highly recommend AGAINST any of those unless you are going to a toga party and plan on puking it all up at the end of the night- NASTY BEER!!!

All I can stress is if you just want a beer to drink out with your friends, not to get trashed, but something to go with a meal etc.... Get beer from a company that has heart! ;)

My personal Fav Breweries: Shiner (TX), Pyramid (WA), Widmere (OR), Unibroue (Canada), Victory (PA), Red Hook (WA)

Again, stick with the wheat beers- malt and hops can be a big turn off to your margarita-loving pallet. But once you get a taste for the wheats, you can explore the other side.

Heffs are a great starter because they have a yummy citrus taste. Considering you like margaritas and those are citrusy- start with a heff! =D (You can get a pyramid or widmere heff almost anywhere, and I've visited both breweries- great companies, good food- lots of heart!)

Lemme know what you think!

Ranger- a lot of people are affected by alcoholism, but there are many more people out there who are not, and can handle a drink or two without damaging their lives. It depends on the individual and how responsible they are going to be about it. I respect that you dont drink for religious purposes but lets not rain on the parade of a 22 year old who wants to have a drink out with friends. If they havent had beer yet, they are obviously responsible and not going to have an issue. (I mean- didnt our president just have a beer? lol)

(PS: Arent we not supposed to talk about religion on here?)

If one were to base what they should and should not do on what bad things have happened to other people, then there would be few safe options for anything to do ever. Ranger, I understand your aversion to beer, but to tell others that everyone who drinks beer is headed for alcoholism, drunk driving, liver diseases or anything like that is just simple scare tactics. Anything done with responsibility will not produce those results, and living life itself involves taking risks. Yes, bad things can and do happen, but generally it is because people are not being entirely responsible. Bio, if you feel the desire to drink beer, whatever your reasons, go ahead and do it. There will always be people around who are more than willing to proselytize and drum up fear in the hopes of ruining someone else's good time.

I bet you would like hard cider, woodchuck. Gotta back up those Yuengling lager lovers though, its my beer of choice.

Oh yeah! I forgot about Woodchuck. I love that stuff. The Pear Cider goes extremely well with a steak dinner.:thm:

Mmmmm I love ciders! I dont have them often, but I'll have to try this Woodchuck you speak of! Sounds yummy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
