Grins' 55g Reef

Yep, I have switched to just using the Ca part of the buffer to get it balanced out. The pH has been fine all along oddly. The Mg wasn't even that bad but is now where I want it. I agree I probably have a bit but if you were to see the tank in person you'd see I have very little micro algae visible. The tang and clean up crew do a good job as does the macro. The back and sides are clean because I don't like the purple spots on the back glass and scrape them. Girls huh? What'cha going to do with us?

This thread is great Grins, hits just about every topic depending on whats going on in your tank, now it seems it is a chemistry quiz! Cool.

Going back to the two part dosing, Firemouth is right on, the Ca will precipitate out if all levels go to high. Everyone tends to worry about PH, but for the most part with bi-weekly WC's PH doesn't tend to be a problem. I have reef buffer, but hardly ever use it unless I get lazy and decide not to perform a WC and wait the 3rd week.

What are your params as you are trying to stabalize your CA? in other words, what is your goal, to keep your Ca at 420 consistently? Also, are you dosing anything else, like Iodine, Strontium, etc. Just curious, I dose Iodine twice a week to keep the GSP and Xenia going strong, they love it. I then use a mixture (Coral vite) twice a week, that gives me the Strontium and other minerals. The rest of the time just straight concentrated Ca.

So I am curious about what else you dose and do you have a set schedule? Always looking for ideas and what others do!

I guess I-26 doesn't go right through Charlotte then, we will waive anyways! :)

The goal is to keep the CA up at 420 and the dkh balanced with it so I can support clams and the SPS I have started collecting. I was not having an issue with the CA until recently and after much opinion seeking I opted to dose a 2 part solution that has recently been developed my a local club sponsor. I started on an aggressive schedule of raising my CA by 20ppm per day. Yep, 20 per day. I'm now on a maintenance schedule and I do my normal 10-15% weekly WCs as well.

I am not planning on dosing iodine, strontium at this point. I don't have plans at this point to keep softies other than the mushrooms, rics and palys.

Great blog grins!

This reading may surprise you.

I've thought about borrowing one of those. Might just do it to be on the safe side. Although I sincerely have very little in the way of nuisance algae and I blame the lack of coraline on the rocks to either my lack of photo skills, moving the rocks too much, and my ca being down the past 2 months.

And as for moderator? Let's not punish everyone else for my tendancy to ramble on. =)

Where do some of you folks find the time to post so much? lol. ;)
