Grins' 55g Reef

Nice Feather duster.
My LFS had some nice big ones for sell. I may have to look into getting 1 or 2 sometime in the future.

Yeah, I thought that comment was a bit tactless, myself.
Just take it as a complement on your knowledge. ;)
Reef tanks do take some time to grow.

No problem...

With the ich breakout I was more concerned with the hospital tank than the display tank. Especially with building our own stand and canopy and getting the equipment upgrades. I can see where the full tank shot looks kinda empty to some.

Meanwhile here is our current equipment to do or buy list:

  • finish canopy and stand
  • complete plans for replacement sump/fuge. We're 99% sure we've found something from Marc at Melev that will work with our skimmer, return pump and room under the stand. We are building it ourselves, easy DIY we're thinking.
  • install (2) T5 units we have into the canopy and order actinics for those.
  • upgrade powerheads to Koralia #3s (or #4s possibly)
  • create a fish cabinet in the garage..not a fish room but where we keep the bulky stuff. Possibly add spigots to the front bottoms of the water vesels so that we can drain water from there instead of the tops.
  • maybe a DIY lime drip once we get more corals
On the livestock current plans are:

  • working on gluing frags of zoa to the front of the overflow box, will definitely be getting more. Might glue some shrooms to the back wall as well.
  • get another skunk cleaner, possibly a fire cleaner as well
  • blue rics.....I want them bad, start a garden on the right
  • clams
  • possibly a starfish
  • more SPS, probably montis, staghorn and birdsnest
  • more LPS such as brains
  • not in a big hurry for more fish although a pair of clowns or other small fish are a possibility

Definitely get one, they are really amazing to watch. I have to remind myself sometimes that it is a worm. I really covet CatPicklesDog's coco worm and need to add one to my official "to get list"

Yeah, the Koralia upgrades would be a good idea. My Koralia 3's provide more than enough current in my 75G. Those things can really move some water. Something a still-photo doesn't show.

Brought home a green pagoda cup this evening. It is still acclimating but the polyps are starting to peek out:

And because he is the boss of the tank, George the Banded Goby (and yes I'm aware that George is probably a girl but my son is in denial)

that duster is amazinggg

what do they require ??

When it comes to knowledge, im good with fish and water quality, but horrible with corals and most inverts =(

My tank is still FOWLR but, in about a month and a half that should change when i work up the guts to spend 500 dollars on a lighting system =)) .

If the tank is already nutrient rich they don't really need anything. Some still feed photoplankton and that is good for them as well, you just squirt it underneath the feathers and let it filter them up into the crown. I add reef bugs every 2-3 days near the powerheads instead.

reef bugs meaning?

and by nutrient rich, how do you achieve this? Just a good salt, or do you dose a lot?

Id like to keep some good looking, more challenging corals, but id also not like to have to dose to much junk if at all possible. Id really like to keep it to just dosing calcium, and iodine.

Obviously water changes will help to replenish nutrients is well, is this all that is needed though?
