hatching eggs

wow...i was just planning on leaving my eggs where momma left'em...is doing these steps necessary or does it just depend? :/
I left for a week and came back to 2 clutching hatching while I was away , 2 tanks have lots of babies. both clutches hatched in the tank and I did not do anything to get them to hatch. so its always possible that a batch will hatch on its own.

I want baby snails darnit! Is there something special I should be doing? I have 6 purples and 1 golden, they're always all over each other though I've chalked it up to either cleaning or fighting because I have yet to have a clutch. I did however have a purple climb completely out of the tank last week, my dog ate her but I'm wondering if she was looking for somewhere to lay eggs. I was soooo mad! But I have no idea how she got out :( Any suggestions on making them do it already?!?
She may have been your lone female and was trying to lay. was your water to high ? they want to lay above the water line.

lol, all these posts on helping clutches to hatch and what i did was:

buy one golden apple snail, put into tank.

buy second golden apple snail, put into same tank.

wait.

find clutches that were laid right up in the hood of the lid beside the lights (resulting in me not being able to turn on tank lights due to the clutches getting too hot and dry, lol)

wait.

wait some more. (betta in tank looking at me sad cause he's living in the dark.....lol)

clutches hatch, hundreds of baby snails.

next day, betta's tummy looks ready to explode, lol.

looks like i lucked out and got a female as my first snail and a male as my second without knowing what gender each snail was.

i had a large number of the baby snails not make it due to the above mentioned glutton of a betta, and some of the weaker ones did die off, but the ones that thrived and grew i gave to my lfs. i kept one of them and she is now as big as her mom (golf ball size).

currently have a batch of baby snails from the following adult snails:

one ivory/golden apple female
one golden apple female (daughter of above ivory/golden)
one green shell/black foot male

i'm guessing the babies are from clutches that both of the females laid, because i ended up with dark mauve/purple shells and greenish yellow shells on the babies and all have a foot/body that is a weird mix of black and yellowy blonde (i'd have to post pics to explain it better, but my camera with really good zoom is m.i.a, grrrr).

anybody here know what sorts of phenotypes and genotypes certain colour snails carry? i'd like to know how the heck i ended up with purpley shelled snails from a green and a golden/ivory...... hmmmmm.....

well the will lay all kinds of differnt colors the genectics you are looking for , can be found on applesnail.net I visit thier often to find ids of some of my snails .

I have had EVERYONE ASKING ABOUT MY SECRET HATCHING ' LOL

well as you see, its NOT a secret , mine just seem to hatch REALLY fast when I do this , as some have metioned above ...................

10 gallon tank , calcium pills are added every 2 weeks , they est veggies *( love cucumbers, zuchini is a fav , and leaf lettace ) I also feed flakes, shrimp pellets , & algea wafers as well :) I leave the water lone pretty low, atleast 4-5 " low ~ (for huge clutches and where the water will not toutch the clutches . usually after I do a water change with cold water, theb add real veggies ^^ look above, I leave the fod in overnight with lights out , usually in breeding mode I will get 2 clutches atleast every 2 days for about off & on 2-3 weeks !!! . right now I am in waiting , no clutches atm .. I still have all differnt sized babies that I havent sold, waiting to see all my differnt colors .. !!! ~~ NOW ~ clutch ~~ I leave it on for 24 -48 hrs , then I take a playing card, or razorbade and slide from the bottom of the clutch up, this usually makes it fall off into my hands , it is ok if it gets in tank , or falls in water, just GET IT OUT > then I put in a tupperware tht I have made whole in the top of, and I put some of thier tank water in the bottom , just a small amount , then I take a pc of styro and use 4 skinny pcs, * I break them to size) and I glue them to make a square, then I lay a pc of cut to fit plastic canvas on top of my stryo boat" , and I also use sticks, I cut them to fit sideways on the canvas, you can use skewers, or bamboo chopsticks. or any plastic, *( idea is to have the clutch not laying flat on surface, so when they hatch they will crawl diown and evntually get into water . *( good ) ~~ I then place my clutchs on the sticks and be very careful placing the whole boat with clutches into my small tupperware, now cut many holes into top, and make sure when you close the top, your not crushing snails, if this is , reduce your water, or cut your stro in half lengthwise so everything fits perfectly .

now I can usually get clutches to hatch between 2 days !! and sometimes a week .

the trick is I put the tupperware on top of my compact florecent light fixture, where I feel the most heat , that is where I put the container. if you do not have this light You can put this system on top of your strip light , just takes a little loger to hatch, I have heard of people using thier pc towers , cable boxes etc.. just so they are getting very very warm , I change the water about every 4 days . I ck for snails then anyway :) all snails in thier I pull the stryo boat out place on counter top, somewhere safe , and I just rince the new baby briggs into a breeding net .. then let the rest of the broggs hatch I just put them where they were . :)

O hope I have explained this good enough for you to make a nice hatery of your own, it is really easy , and can be done with items in the home :) ~~ HTH ~~

I will have more babies up for sale soon , right now I want to wait for more clutches, and see' what few I have left what all thier colors will be . I am also makig another snail breed out tank, so they are not overcrowded .

goos luck everyone ! ~~~~

any snails yet?
Hi FtwayneFish: Are you still active on the site? I noticed you have a lot or RCS. I just introduced 4 RCS to my 3 gallon, planted tank. I must have gotten lucky, as I believe I have a female now carrying eggs. Do you have experience with RCS hatching and the care of the young ones?
Thank you!

I float mine on a piece of Styrofoam on the water in a covered tank. I mist them a couple times a week. It's best to use a shallow water tank 3-4 inches of water, with a good build up of algae on the rocks, glass etc. For best results.
Thank you!
Randy

So for one you need to have your water level 2-3 inches below the top of your tank. The snails leave the water to lay their eggs just above the level of the water on the side of the tank. Also you need to remember that these snails have gills and lungs so they can live out of the water as well so your snail that got eaten was probably leaving the water to lay eggs. so please if you keep these snails make sure you have a lid on your tank or they will all leave. One more thing too snails need calcium so if yours are not laying eggs they are lacking calcium or other needed nutrients possibly lacking protien as well. look up what apple snails need in their diet make sure you are giving them what they need lower your water level and make sure they can not escape and you will have more snails then you know what to do with in no time.

the eggs often fall off the side of the tank and then drown. this is the only time i help them hatch is if they fall off which often they do.
