help sexing dempseys

well i noticed in the last couple of days that the number was shrinking quickly so last night i watched for quite a while and noticed that mom is nolonger relocating the strays but eating them. i remembered i had a spare 20 gallon in storage so going to start cycling the tank today and remove mom. got a few better pics of them last night while investigating.

ok so i took gravel from the parents tank to put in the 20 gallon. i filled it half with water from the parents tank half with fresh water. put an old penguin pump on it with one of the old filter cartriges. i know this speeds up the cycling but does anyone know how long i should wait to put mom in?

whoa, your jack dempsey is black? I don't really know much about them so sorry if that's a stupid point...

This is my brothers jack - desperately needs rehoming, he outgrew his tank long ago...still no interest and I don't want to give him to LFS, as they'll just pass it on to anyone.

First of all congrats on the spawn. I've got a new regular JD spawn that should be free swimming tonight, and another Gold Morph JD Spawn. JDs are great!

As to your cycling question, you need to add a fish immediately or you'll lose the nitrifying bacteria. They have to have a food source. As long as you don't overfeed her the female should be okay in the twenty now. In a week or so you can increase her food intake to start getting her back in breeding condition. Good luck.

joe im pretty sure the jack shown is a male. beauty too! jack dempseys change colors due to moods and such. they get really pale when stressed out. my female only turned almost black when she was ready to spawn and switches back and forth right now. thanks for the info going to drop her in the 20 tonight.

ok put her in last night. feel sorry for her it seems like she is looking for her babies.... or maybe her man lol. dad is still somewhat caring for the babies. they dont follow him anymore but he keeps checking on them. not many left.... id say less than 50. beginning to wonder if any will make it.
