Help the victims of Katrina!

I'm so glad I live in the Pacific NW...Not much to worry about here, since I live on a hill that eliminates flood risk, no tornadoes, no hurricanes, just earthquakes.

And we're long overdue for the "big one". Vancouver is ill prepared for a huge earthquake... if it happens today we're all screwed. I hope it doesn't hit in my lifetime.

I live in West Central Illinois, an area that not uncommonly sees bad summer thunderstorms and tornadoes. Not a great risk, but not unheard of either. If my community was destroyed by a natural disaster, I'd appreciate assistance, even if it was nothing more than hot food and shelter until we could try to rebuild. How often do Cat. 4 or 5 hurricanes hit the gulf coast? I have a bit more trouble feeling sorry for folks that build multi-million dollar homes in areas that annually experience brush fires, but the hurricane and its aftermath are far from common occurrences.

I don't think anyone should be criticized for suggesting we be charitable to people in need. Almost no one skates through life without needing help at some point.

Im not trying to change your views on anything. But you decided what you decided. That's fine with me. End of story.

I didn't mean to come across the way I did. I really didn't mean to turn this into a debate or anything like that. My apologies.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the ENTIRE city of New Orleans was not told to evacuate before the storm. Now the whole city supposedly needs to be evacuated due to the extensive flooding. A lot of people DID evacuate & they still will need help from the red cross & others, since many of them have nothing left. Yes New Orleans is below sea level & you may say nobody should be living there in the first place. It was founded in 1718, so it's a bit late for that. I also don't know if they were expecting the wide spread damage across the entire gulf coast that occured. And I doesn't really matter to me if People were supposed to evacuate or not, the fact is that they need help now just to survive. I gave some money to the red cross & also to the LSPCA. Nobody has to donate a cent if they don't want to, but many of us do. I've even thought of going and donating my services as an RN if I wasn't obligated to my job.

Has anyone watched the news today and yesterday? Even if you are not in the states, you can find it on the net. The damage and devistation is being compared to the aftermath of Hiroshima and the tsunami. It is worse that has been in our experience. This wasn't your garden variety hurricane that hit. A lot of people have been through hurricanies before, but not like this.
Contribute to you local Red Cross...they're the ones that can get aid in now if anyone can.

I have a friend that lives in La, not too far from N.O. Yes, they were told to evacuate. Southbound highways and rodes were blocked to stop people from going in. Many people refused to leave. My friend was hoping people wouldn't think all Louisiannians were as dumb as the ones shown on TV refusing to leave.

Though she was not in the direct path of the hurricane (meaning the really bad part of it), her area was hit by severe storms. They're without power and had some damage outside of their home.

As for saying people are idiots for living in the lower than sea-level, that's harsh. We could say the same for people who continue to live in the Carolinas, Florida and other areas that get hit with hurricanes. We could say that about people who live in tornado alley.

These were their homes. Plantations suffered a great deal of damage, which is unfortunate because they're beautiful. How often is La hit by hurricanes? Is this something common liken to Florida?

N.O., I believe, is already getting support from the government. Though donating to the Red Cross is great.

United Way...sigh...my husband is practically forced to donate to them from his paychecks through the Union.

Bet he has the option of "where" his donation can go, like I do.. It's a separate form to fill out.

He's making sure his donations go to the Autism Society of Michigan. :) I didn't think about that. They tried to give him a hard time about it, wanting him to donate directly into their funding.

Talked to my friend from La this morning. N.O. is still going under heavy flooding. She told me there's even been violent reactions from some stranded people towards those trying to help.

As for some of the people who stayed behind, she said many of the ones that stayed are the ones that live in the projects. They didn't think they could afford to leave. I was asking her why people didn't just offer, she said they did. But some refused or reacted violently.

Though as I said before, she agreed that some who stayed 'with my home', were idiots.

I don't know this for fact but my guess would be that an aweful lot of the people that didn't evacuate and were injured or killed stayed because they had no where else to go and no money to do it with. These same people may not carry the same insurance most of us would for the same reason.

I think those are the folks that need help and I do feel sorry for them. Its not easy to relocate to another "safer" place when you can't even really afford to live where you are.
Tom

Exactly.
How do you evacuate your city when you are dependent on public transportation to get around IN your city? How do you evacuate if some family members are bedridden or dependent upon some type of equipment for their survival? How do you evacuate with less than 1/2 a tank of gasoline and it is taking an hour to go 2 miles and there aren't any gas stations open along the highway? Where will you go if all of the hotels and motels along your route are full? "Sorry sir, the only room we have less is the Presidential Suite at $250 a night for single occupancy and you have yourself, your spouse, three kids and grandpa (who has alzheimer's and keeps screaming 'Help! Save me from these Nazi's!). Even if we let you stay, all the extra beds brings it to $500 a night." And of course you will need it for at least 3 weeks before you can go home!

Besides, even if all of this was not the case and some person was just plain old stupid...
1) There but for the grace of God go I
2) (to paraphrase) "Ye who have never been stupid and needed some type of help from someone cast the first stone"
3) If you have never needed help...Just keep living, you will!
