Help the victims of Katrina!

I think the problem lies in assuming that those who stayed behind all did so for the same reasons. Some people had the ability to heed the evacuation and chose not to do so. Some would have, but didn't have the ability to do so, or were obligated to remain behind to care for fill in the balnk (disabled family/friends, animals, etc).

For those who could have reasonably left and chose to remain, I have little sympathy.

For those who had little option but to ride it out, my sympathies go out to them in their time of need.

For those who are now looting the ruins, no sympathy of any kind.

Don't know if any of you have seen the special report that was just on the news, but the Mayor of New Orleans just held a press conference and he expects the death toll to be in the high hundreds if not thousands. He said they're finding scores of dead in the water now and that doesn't include the dead they expect are trapped in attics that they won't find until the water level falls...

The looters make me ill as well. I have an image in my head, from after the Tsunami, the news was showing video of a man removing jewelry from a dead woman's body. I'm afraid that image will never leave my head, and everytime I hear the word "looting", that's what I think of.

There are some sick, sick people in this world!

I'm not quite ready to say that looters, those who are stealing non-survival items, should be shot, but I'm just about there. When it comes to stealing jewelry off a body, I don't have any doubts...

i know im only 15 but i dont care who you are you should feel pity for these people and help in any way you can. if i could i would go there and help. yah sure some of these people made stupid mistakes but what if it were you? i mean come on everyone has made stupid mistakes before. when time of natural disaster hits us what can we do but help others. lets say a tornado hit your state or country and you had a chance to evacuate but didnt wouldnt you still want people to help or maybe you didnt have a chance to evacuate. there are so many lives lost there i cant believe anyone would not help if they could. and dont ever call someone a dork for trying to help others. sry if i upset anyone but this is how i feel.

Thank You.... There is hope for the next generation. :bowing:

Now, how do I put you in charge of picking my nursing home? :)

From a person that grew up in "Tornado Alley", when a tornado hits you have little to no warning that a tornado is even there, much less on the ground. Only a short preceding time of a tornado "possibility" may happen. Those warnings happen extremely often and only 1 in 20 actually ends with a tornado occuring. And where? No idea. What direction? No idea. Your neighbor's house might dissapear completely with no survivors, while 20 feet away your house has no damage.

But I spent 8 years living in Virginia with hurricanes. There you know a hurricane is coming for days and days before it hits. And it hits large swaths of areas. Not just a thin squiggly line of houses.

I too feel sorry for all the deaths occuring. And I wish them all the help we can offer. But once, again, it was not the point of the post, but the method of delivery I intended my comment on.

Dorks. :joke:

There should be plenty of chances to help. The tv stations here in town held an all day telethon collecting donations for the Red Cross.
Glad to see Bush cut short his vacation and called an emergency cabinet meeting. Have heard he is releasing emergency oil reserves, wonder what else he will come up with. Illinois is sending an emergency medical team down, and several people from town have gone with the Red Cross too.

Watching the news...there were people that were so poor they could not afford the tank of gas to get out of town.
They were initially telling people to look for people to rescue..leave the bodies for now.
One lady's husband was ill at home on oxygen. She stayed home with him becasue there was no where to take him. When the power failed he died...they found her with his body on a raft pushing it out to the road.
People in shelters that got seperated from family and don't know if they are dead or alive...and the people that are working to help have lost everything too. Bush was on TV tonight calling this our country's worst natural disaster since the San Fransisco earthquake of 1906.
Apparently there are areas along the coast in Mississippi they haven't even got to yet.
They are now saying estimated 1000 dead in New Orleans.
People have survived through hurricanes before, but no one knew that this one would be this bad.
I just can't imagine....

I have a feeling that that is a gross understatement.

The people I feel the saddest for are the rescuers - military, police, etc. that are inevitably going to die trying to rescue some of these goofs. The same goofs that ignored a mandatory evacuation, and the same goofs who are out trying to break into any store they can find.

Well my 2 cents. I live in New Orleans, at least used to. For years, the educated people knew it was going to happen, it was just a question of when. Being in the geography business, I always new it was going to happen, so I was prepared. I evacuated to Jonesboro Arkansas, but it was not easy. The traffic was unbelievable. It took 13 hours. I am relatively well off, so I could get out with my pets (not the fish). Originally, I planned on going to a hotel downtown. I'm glad I didn't. My father was not as lucky.

He works for the department of health, and was called in to work the headquaters in Baton Rouge (80 miles away) a day before the hurricane hit (Sunday). It took him 6 hours to get 12 miles. The winds started picking up, at that point he turned around.

He ended up working the special needs shelter in the Superdome. This is different from the normal shelter in the dome, but still pretty bad. I heard from him two days ago, and he said it was hell.

As for the regular sheter, it must be awful. Make no mistake, many of the people are good, but there is also a large portion that would really prefer to be out there looting. In the past when the dome has been used as a shelter, people have looted the dome, others have been shot. That is why they were padded down and sent through metal detectors.

Like my father, I work for the department of health, but I make maps (GIS on computers). I am not essential personel, so I could evacuate. I will be heading to Baton Rouge on friday to do what ever they tell me to do.

As for the looters, I think the city would be better off if they were killed....this is the same population that are in gangs and shoot people everyday. New Orleans usually has at least one murder per day...its always the same group. I would be willing to bet that many of the looters planned on doing this ahead of time. They have done it in the past, but not to this extent.

This may not be politically correct, but sometimes it would be better if there were no trials. Do those looters really need that big screen TV they are grabbing. Are we still presuming that they are innocent? Just shoot them. Once the message gets out that they are being killed, the looting will stop.

I'm more of a math and science guy, so words are not my strong point. I don't want peoples sympathy, I really don't need it. I hope my father will get to Baton Rouge soon and get some time off.

I guess what I would like is for more funding to go to coastal restoration in Louisiana. If funding is ever an issue in the government just remember what happened here. Not only that, but a good portion of your seafood, and petroleum products come through New Orleans.

I just heard that they realesed the prisoners...they should have killed them instead...I know thats not PC.

On a lighter note, I am curious to see what will happen to the Saints. Realistically, the city could not support them before the storm, and the owner threatened to move. Well now he has no stadium. I wonder if the NFL, which acts like it is a good citizen, will stay or leave. I think it would look pretty bad if they left now. Kind of like leaving your wife after you find out she as cancer.

My guess is that there will be at least 1000 people dead in New Orleans.

As for the guy who called someone a dork, that's just pitiful. Whats the point? If that's the best insult you could come up with, that's pathetic...you would not last a minute with my friends, you would be the butt of all of our jokes. Then, we would also make fun of you because you probably would not underestand the jokes. But i'm sure that you could respond with "dorks". Then we would make fun of you becuse that would be pretty lame. I'm sure that after minutes of think you could come up with something clever like "geek" or "nerd" but whats the point? Its time to move up to the big leagues...dork just doesn't cut it.
By the way, if you are 13 or younger, I apologize for my comments. Although, it is still not nice to call people dorks. When you get older, you will realise this. Hopefully by then, you will also have some more cleaver comebacks.

Sorry for the rambling, words are not my strong point (although slightly better than the dork guy).

Feel free to flame me (about the non-PC stuff). Even though I may not be able to respond it does not mean I mind. I am pretty thick skinned and can take care of myself. I will probably post again tomorrow, but then it will be a few days, maybe weeks.

Oh yeah, one more thing. As bad as the looting looks, I am amazed at the stories I see of the generosity of people outside of New Orleans. I see people advertising their houses for people to come and live. If I look in the mirror, I am not sure If I could do the same thing. These people are surely better then me.
