set your 5 gallon back up with betta and put your oto in there and after your tank is cycled add 2 more otos
Kyle,

Nooooooooooooooooo. No cycle with oto. Oto delicate. Oto no like. Oto die. Poor oto.

thanks Mary.
I know I should listen to everyone, but it's hard to when they're being mean about it (like the guy that told me to buy a pet rock and knock myself out with it).
But I will take people's advice and probably not get any more fish. I want to get another aquarium, but I don't think I have anymore room for one.

well, thanks again,
Mariah
P.S.- you said fish experience pain; I thought fish didn't have nerves?
Sorry about te 5 gallon thing. I thought you wanted to keep all the fish you had in the five gallon in the five gallon and buy more fish for the ten gallon. anyway I have to admit you are still overstock. Plecos make huge amounts of waste. You should be able to keep your otos just make sure you get a couple more. As for the pet rock thing that was kinda' a joke there was a really funny post recently. That is why everyone has avatars with rock with purple string. check out LFS hilarity in the newbie forum.
Good Luck

i hear you Roan but it sounds like she's got it in an uncycled overstocked 10 gallon as it is

at least moving to the 5 w/ only the betta there are smaller spikes

and well as w/ any fishy cycle like this she's going to have to sacrafice timeline and do LOTS of waterchanges

Yah, I hear yah. I think I'm just going to turn a blind eye to this thread. From what I've read thus far she hasn't done any water changes and doesn't know what they are.

You mentioned waiting until the weekend?

You CAN NOT WAIT UNTIL THE WEEKEND TO START DOING WATER CHANGES, YOUR FISH WILL DIE!

I hate to tell you this, but if you don't do SOMETHING your fish WILL DIE!

There's no way around it, you can not keep them all.

I hate to be redundant, but budrecki is right about plecos and other bottom feeders.

Think of it this way, the algae and left-over food that is naturally in there will still be in there (inside of your pleco, cory, etc) That stuff is going to then come out of that pleco, etc. and be right back in your tank! But, you will need to feed it more than whats already in there, therefore, you end up with more waste.

Make sense?

So the wastes, algae, food, etc. can only leave in one manner right now.

*****That is where you come in.

You MUST do waterchanges, or else the stuff will stay in there and become ammonia and poison your fish!

Your tank does not have a biofilter right now because it has not cycled, the ammonia will poison your fish.

By now, hopefully you have figured out that you have WAY too many fish.

I know we may seem rude, but we know that your fish are out there suffering, and they need your help right now.

You may need to do some research.

ok here is what i did.

i have 3 bleeding hearts, one pleco, one oto, one cory, and a moneywort plant in my 10g. (i'm going to get more otos, cories, and bleeding hearts).

i have one betta, two platies, and a snail in my 5g.

i put my guppies in a smaller tank but like i said i am trying to get rid of them.

i bought a gravel vacuum, and i'm going to start doing water changes every week.

thank you guys for all your help. i know a lot more about taking care of my fish now.

Mariah

Do you like your pleco? The reason I ask is many people are told they need them to keep algae down. But......armed with your water changes and a little algae scraper (cheap, like $10) you dont need the plec. On top of that, they dont really eat all kinds of algae, and dont eat it thier entire lives. This is besides the fact that, unless you have one of the pricey smaller types, it will outgrow your tank. Just a thought.

It is good to see you stuck in and learned something!! :thm:

Now this is scary.

You originally started this thread on 1/1/2006. On 2/6 you asked what a water change was. Yesterday you post that you are "going to start" doing water changes every week.

So, your fish have not had their water changed for 47 days that we are aware of. YOU have known about water changes for at least 10 of those 47 days.

Wanna know why your guppies die?

Now hold on a sec Roan. She seems to have seen the light, and we all know how hard it is to turn the tides of ignorance. If she's planning weekly changes, then so much the better. And she may have done at least one change already. Her post isn't specific on that matter.

Remember, we all suck at keeping fish when we start. I just had to rescue a betta this week from an office bowl that was so polluted with food, the water was goopy. I tried to explain how not to overfeed and the woman's eyes started to glaze over. I moved him to a larger fishbowl with more surface area (it was all that was available, he needed out of that bowl quickly.) The main problem? She was given this fish out of the blue and had no idea how to care for it.

I'm just glad we've possibly helped Mariah onto the path. Once on the path of good fishkeeping, then she might have success. Baby steps in the beginning.

Okay, you are doing good but you still need to trade in your pleco. Plecos generate a lot of waste and they will grow larger than your tank. They usually need 55-70 gallons. Plus that will overdue you tank. I think you are still slightly overstocked but I will leave that to the professionals.
