Hi, I just need some advice.

Time for a sub-catagory under freshwater newbie.

:rant2: I'M NOT GOING TO LISTEN SO DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING TO HELP :rant2:

alright roan, sorry, but i'm tired of it. you have done nothing but be mean to me since i started this thread. don't think i haven't done something to help the fish just because i didn't post it. either stop bashing me or stop posting here. i think your purpose here is to turn everyone against me. i appreciate advice, but i definitely don't appreciate it when all you do is complain to me.

i did do a water change. and i don't even know if my guppies are dying fast- maybe the parents are eating their babies. i'm going to get rid of the guppies anyway.

budrecki- i am listening, and i am taking people's advice.

what is wrong here i can't say anything without people being mean to me. aren't there any rules at this website making sure that doesn't happen? if there aren't, there should be.

There are rules. PM a moderator (you can use the red and white triangle button under peoples avitars to report misconduct). I certainly agree that a bit more tact could be used when approaching newbies like yourself, but you have to realize what side the poster is coming from. For one thing, the probably care more about your fish than they do about offending you, which may seem harsh, but there is a silver linning in that cloud in the form of good advice! Also, on a daily basis we see different noobs asking the same questions, and it can get frustrating having to repeat yourself, even if its to a different person every time (this is a reason, by no means an excuse).

Another problem is when people ask for advice and dont take it. Which it seems you may have done off the bat, but you cant just turn arround in a day. It seems you are learning, and trying to correct your mistakes. While it would be nice if you became an expert over night, that would be pure fantasy. Continue to post, and learn from the advice, and from your mistakes. If someone is bugging you, and the mods dont find a reason to reprimand them for it, there is an ignore feature you can use. Just click on the user name, and there should be an :ignore this user option".

In roans defense, there is a wealth of knowledge stored in her! And her "rudeness" can also be interperated as "loves fishness" :D

Sumthin fishy is right some newbies just won't listen. I don't think you are one now but you do have to start researching. forums are a great tool but you might get better results looking at articles on this site. also Roan is cool and knows alot so don't be offended

i know that it can be frustrating, and tha people really care. im not mad at them for that, and i'm not really mad at them for being mean, i just wish they would stop because i'm sure they're annoying themselves in addition to me when doing that.

i'm trying to do research right now, mainly on forums, but i've also read articles, and i think i'm going to subscribe to a magazine (i don't remember what it's called right now), but it can be hard to find what you want without asking specific questions. even specific questions can lead to lots of different advice. but i start a new thread or look for the answer to my questions on forums when i'm not sure about something.

note: for those of you who are advising me to get rid of my pleco- i'm going to see if the pet store will take him back. i decided that yes, he will be too big for the aquarium, even if he only gets to 5 inches. i don't want to take him back, but i guess i need to. and if i take him back, would it be okay if i got two more otos (plus the one i've got), two more panda cories (plus the one i've got), and three more bleeding hearts (plus the three i have now) and not be overstocking the tank? and don't live plants let you overstock a little? because i have a moneywort.

Good, I'm glad you are taking the pleco back.

I also apologize if I seem mean to you, however, fishy and General are correct: I DO care more about the fish. Sorry if that bothers you, but that's how I am and how I was brought up. I've always had animals and have always been taught that the animals come first (after kids, of course). They rely on us for food, comfort, housing -- all their needs and it's also our responsibility to know what those needs are. If we can't meet their needs, then we shouldn't have the animal.

I won't even let my 9 year old daughter have a fish tank because I don't believe she has shown proper responsibility yet.

So, take my attitude with 2 cents and read between the lines. I WILL try to be nicer to you. Promise.

As for the plants, moneywort is not enough to overstock your tank. Your tank has to be at least 90% full of plants before you should even consider that route.

Hi Mariah,

I would definitely try to take the pleco back. I would not reccomend getting that many fish to add in his place. Remember that having more fish means more work cleaning and sacrificing some of your fish's quality of life. You have come a long way. :)

It is often a beginning fishkeeper's first instinct to overstock.
Remember that it may be a 10 gallon tank, but there is really not a full 10 gallons in it because of the water displacement of any plants, gravel, or decorations you have.

That would put you up to: 3 ottos, 3 pandas, and 6 bleeding heart tetra in less than 10 gallons.

+ 5 tetra + 2 catfish and you have the contents of my 29 gallon

Also, ottos love a constant supply of fresh, soft algae and there wouldn't be enough in a 10 gallon tank to feed 3. I don't even think that my 29 gallon could feed 3. There is not much algae in my 10 gallon. Most ottos will not eat brown algae.

You may have already said this, but: What is your filtration? What foods do you feed the fish and how often?

You may not be doing perfect, but you are getting better ;)

Catlover- what would you suguest?(not agruing, just asking. I dont think 1 otto 1 cory and 3 tetras is too hard on a 10)

I like the idea of adding more of those fish(when the pleco finds a new home), because they all would prefer to be in a group. I think adding all of them would be a bit much, but mabey just the corys and ottos would be ok. True ottos need a lot of algae, but feeding zookeeny and algae wafers can make up for that. I currently have 2 ottos in my 10, planted, and they still cant keep up with the algae thats in there.

IMO, she should get rid of the pleco and the oto. After her tank has cycled Mariah should add two more cories, wait a couple of weeks and add three more bleeding hearts. That would put the 10g at 3 cories and six tetras. I don't think that would be overstocked at all, however, Mariah must do weekly waterchanges after her tank is finished cycling. Until it is cycled, the tank probably needs a waterchange at least every other day. Also, no fish should be added until the tank is finished cycling.
