Went to my LFS today to check out their selection of driftwood. They had different kinds, but I really liked the Malaysian the best. I found one, shaped like a big X, it was about 10 inches tall and about a foot wide, really cool shape. I looked at the tag and it said 24.99! Is that a normal price range? and some of the larger pieces were 39.99! I think I will find my own driftwood, boil it, and save a few bucks. I found decent prices online, but you don't get to choose your piece, unfortunately.

I almost bought the piece, too, but I kept hearing this faint little voice in my head saying "sucker" (hehe)

Anyone have thoughts on this?

Economics 101.

Supply and Demand.

He has a product, sets a price, and sells it to somebody at that price.

Somebody has bought at that price before, so that's the Market Price.

Nobody saying you have to buy!

:hi:

yeah, I guess so.....if I could sell driftwood at that price, I certainly would!

I think I paid about $20 for the driftwood in this pic. It is a 10g tank so that should give you some idea of the size of the peice.

Importing a seasoned hardwood that is biotope specific commands a higher price. You will know it is safe for fish hailing from the same region. This is a common price. Also most peices of malay wood have sunk right away when placed in my tanks. Selecting a wood from your area can be hit or miss where toxins are concerned. If you must do it, select a hard wood so it will not degrade too quickly. It will likely not match your boitope.

ahhh, I see. Well, it looks like that's what it costs for a decent piece of driftwood.....maybe I'll go back and purchase that nice one I was looking at! I bought a bag of some small grapevine pieces at PetSmart, but I will have to somehow fasten suction cups to them so they'll stay in place. I have them soaking now, but I'm not sure if that will work.

you can fond better pricing on the internet..the problem you'llhave is that you don't get to pick your own pieces..
if you were doing a big tank or lots of tanks no biggie..order a bunch and you can figure out ways to make it work.

but if you do it onesies twosies..it's hit or miss

Thanks :D I have it moved over to the corner now, just makes for easier cleaning. And that peice STILL leeches tannins into the water and it has been in the 10g since april and was in my 55g for a couple months before that.
