How big is Nano?

Sorry if I seem to be banging on at things you've already answered but if I don't understand something I keep asking until I do (very embarrassed now).

I've been looking at the GARF site again and I found something that I remembered but couldn't quite put my finger on... in the last 2 paragraphs before the day 3 section of this topic he mentions about using low lights and no skimmer as it would remove all the coraline spores that he's trying to cultivate. I assume this would only be the case if I was trying to "farm" corals and not for the basic marine set-up with live rock and (eventually) fish?

Please don't be embarassed. You're asking questions before you get started so you're ahead of the game right there.

He is talking about coraline algae and not corals which need light and benefit from skimming as well although there are some that dispute over skimming some SPS tanks. Overskimming though, not skimming. All I can tell you about skimming and coraline is that I have coraline in purple, pink, orange, bright red, dark red, lime green and who knows what else is in there and I use a skimmer.

Awesome, the GF wants some of those Blue Clams she's seen on other sites :eek3:

Guess I got to get my shopping list sorted now (including skimmer) for all the kit I need, I've already got the plans for the corner stand the tank is going on as well as the glass cutting sizes for the custom tank we're going to make (this is where my budget gets stretched a little thin) so in a few months (hopefully before X-mas) I should have a nice new 36"x18"x18" tank sitting ready for the agrocrete I'm going to make (phew talk about biting off to much LOL).

Something has just come up during a conversation with the GF about RO water, while trying to explain it to her she asked me why it was necessary as "water is water surely" sprang from her tiny lips, and I found myself unable to explain what where and why it's necessary.

So please feel free to lecture me about why RO water should be used and why TAP water should not.

Also I'm looking about for "Live Rock" and was wondering if THIS STUFF was any good because it looks like I'm going to need about 30Kg's minimum for the tank we are going to build and that's a whopping £210 just for the rock!

Would we have to get it all in one go or could we do it in say 3 bunches of 10kg (to get free shipping)?

The major difference between RO and tap is that tap water is filled with chemicals to make it safe for us to drink, metal deposits from the water company and usually traces of nitrates and phosphates to name a few..These are all causes for nucience algae to grow in the tank and it can become a real battle against it. So, RO water has all these elements stripped out and your left with clean and about 95% pure water for the aquarium. This is a must in my opinion as you can spend so much time and money fighting algae attacks with your efforts to remove it and the money gone on removal media's...

I had that type of live rock in my last reef, brought from ebay too...Its one of the most expensive payouts in setting up a reef, another good way is to scan your local newspapers in London and look for people that are selling up or break a reef down, as its usually sold for about £5 a KG...a good deal by all accounts...I will PM you a company tomrrow of a live rock supplier here in the UK and see what price they come up with for your ammount...

Personaly, i would get it all in one go...
