Squirrel, the OP, has a 220, wants 10 goldies and plants.

The thread hijacker Rey HAS 10 goldfish and a pleco in a 55g.

This thread is getting a little confusing. Let's make sure we say who we're referring to in our posts. . . .

Ah, okay. Well, 10 would be too many for a 55g, but a 220g would be ample even with fully grown goldfish. I'd probably even put more, but 10 is good.

But plants are still an issue. They really do like their salad. A lot.

if eating plants is good for them then they can eat away :)

They will overeat, create excess waste and it will probably be a real mess. I tried a few plants with 2 comets and they destroyed them in no time.

wow..thank you all for information!! very appreciated. I will make accomidations to move some of them over to another tank...gotta buy one first, but it seems at though everyone agrees about 10 being too many for the 55gl... they act and look very happy and healthy right now..but I guess right now is not the point.....

the pleco..forgot what kind it is... brownish with black dots... well it has nearly doubled in size over the past two months...and keeps the walls pretty clean... he seems to be doing well...also the tank temp stays at around 72 or so...

hijacker...haha..lol...that is funny...just getting into the convo....

thanks again!!!

It can work for a while. I have 8 temporarily in a 60g, but it's pushing the limits (well, over the limit) and they are small. They grow fast and produce a lot of waste and the maintenance can easy get away from you with severe overstocking like that...

You would have a lot less trouble in the long run with 5 in a tank that size, even tho that is still overstocked somewhat.

Rubberlip/Rubbernose plecos do quite well with goldfish.
no, they will not. even if they are living they are not thriving.

does anyone know a formula by which to measure the amount of fish per cubic inch with mechanical filteration?

I have always gone by the 10X filtration rule. If you have a 50g tank have filtration that cycles 500g per hour.
