How to safely run a sand bottom tank

I used the black sand from Petco and have had no problem with it getting in my two HOB filters. Have had it for almost a year.

I keep the same black petco sand in one of my tanks and like it as well. It's a very large grained sand with properties similar to pool filter sand (which I use in my other tanks).

When adding water back to the tank, I always put a glass or small bowl( i keep one just for this and this alone) in the tank and pour the water "into" the container. It is under water but doing so minimizes any substrate agitation. This works great for me any time I set up a new tank also.

Just don't put the filter intake too close to the sand, and always unplug everything when doing water changes. Leave the HOBs off until the sand settles (I usually do it overnight).

If you avoid plays and that will avoid most potential issues with sand in the filter. Adding a foam pre-filter to your filter, will give you an extra bit of insurance with a sand substrate.

Turn off your filter for the first 48 hours after adding sand, unless you want a sand filter.

This is complete nonsense.

OP, you got some good suggestions on how to use sand. This post wasn't one of them.

if you turn the filter off for 48 hours it could send you ibto a mini cycle.
