HR 669 : CONGRESSIONAL HEARING BANNING NONNATIVE SPECIES APRIL 23, 2009 ACTION NEEDED

anyone ever snag a carp? or seen purple loosestrife? caught oscars/cichlid/eurpean gar in florida? caught a eurasian ruff?stepped on a zebra muscle?seen a sea lamprey on lake trout? all of these are invasive species and most of them are destroying native habitats and whole economies. were quick to jump on this as we think about or hobby and the impact this legislation would have on it. the premise behind this is actually WAY OVERDUE. i have issues with wild caught fish. im sure most importers (at least i hope) have ways of collecting with out damaging ecosystems. But i do know a man who used to collect marine animals with dynamite or ink.if youve ever seen footage of it its amazing and sickening to watch. just some things to chew on before we run to our legislatures.

AMEN!!!!

Couldn't have said it better myself

alright, but seriously i experience seeing koi fish in lakes and also Oscars and pleco, this coming from someone in Los Angeles too reefplayground

yes, exactly coming from someone who lives in la. Because here in California, we have seen how invasive species are destroying our own native wildlife.

Jesus, look at what things like snakeheads have done to the local populations of fish all over the entire US. In just seven years they've managed to destroy entire ecosystems.

sorry, I'd have to say that the protection of thousands of species of fish supersedes the desire of a few hobbyists to keep a particular species.

The bill isnt automatically making everything illigal. why does no one understand this?

Well your right on that reefplayground, i don't think there would be a ban on most of the common fish, but maybe a few,but again i don't think this will pass at all.

what do you think?

And please explain the logistics of how exactly this bill would actually ban every species? I'd really looooooove to hear how the government would single handily prevent the importation of every species as everyone here is claiming this bill would do.

please, someone enlighten my poor ignorant soul on how that would be done.

Because adding a species to the approved list is going to be soooooooo hard. I just couldn't imagine how damsels would ever be added to that list as they pose such a huge threat in every state and have been seen destroying our cold water ecosystems. There's just no hope for the little damsel. You cna flush that argument down the drain right?

The ban is worded differently, so please take this seriously.

The ban is bad for one primary reason; if a species is not on the APPROVED list, it is AUTOMATICALLY BANNED as UNAPPROVED, even though it doesn't appear on the unapproved list, until a risk assessment is made for the species and it is put on the approved list.

Actually this is going to effect the reptile trade and many of the freshwater trade as well. This will ban most Boas, pythons and other large snakes. I am also sure this would involve Snakeheads and other large fish, aka Tankbusters, as well. And to also toss in some good measure, i think they may toss in Saltwater as well. Do a blanket ban all together.

Now you think about this as well, if our economy is in the tanker do to politicians, do you really think they are going to know the difference between a damsel or a lionfish? No, most will not care. They are pretty much uneducated in our hobby so do not assume they know what you are talking about.

Just sit down and read this bill. I have in depth. I have been posting this and have known about the bill since it came out. I am part of the reptile hobby and we have been fighting this bill since day one.

There are other groups that are fighting the good fight, we have PIJAC and USARK, all good groups.

Hi All
I sent an email to Bambi this morning asking if there is a list that we can see of the animals they would like to ban. As someone who's kept fish of over 25 years and used to work in a pet shop I do have concerns about how much live rock is mined for our use and have seen how much of it dies once it gets here. Not just in pet shops but in home aquariums due to owners lack of knowledge and poor tank management. Also the countries who allow collectors to poison fish and then export them here for sale in our pet shops. On the other hand we who love and breed fish have done wonderful things for our industry. We have saved some species from going extinct and created new colors and kinds through our experimentation's. We made huge strides in understanding how our finny friends live and what they need to be happy and live longer lives. We as an industry have had more success with breeding than all the labs in the world do to our undying love for our fish. And our constant quest for more knowledge.
