but I have found one :D well actually my gran and papa used to keep fantails in it :) Basically they are looking to start a small cheap fish tank with it, its quite big (for a fish bowl) although there is no filter or heater in it. So because of the winter and the fact that the UK is at a stand still I want to make it into a '£10 setup' Its because my papa is recovering from cancer and can't go anywhere.
Basically it will be a basic tank with a heater, filter and gravel with some decor. I am looking at some things on ebay like a very cheap sponge filter (I think) :

will this work? my plan is this:

lighting: undecided
filter: the link above
heater: will figure out
substrate: gravel
decor: something which the fish would like :)
fish: I don't know, I was thinking a betta though

now I know fish bowls are frowned upon but I want to see how this goes and maybe get a fish in it. If not it will come home to my bedroom and I'll figure something out.

pics friday because that is when I shall see it next

I think I know the answer but I just want opinions. And don't worry no fish are in it or anything

sorry for spamming AC like this lol

You might want to think about something like a few cherry red shrimps instead of a betta; they can tolerate a broader range of temperatures (mine do just fine in a room temperature tank - about 72-74 degrees F - without a heater so you might not need one depending on how warm the room is, which would save space and funds), help clean their own tank, and eat very, very little. They're also pretty fun to watch :)

for a £10 setup (without heater) there are several other options.

you've got the several other options for coldwater temp fishes like the variatus x platies and white cloud mountain minnow. You'll definitely be able to meet your £10 target with these choices (ie coldwater without heater)

How much water does it hold?

well I saw it today and its pretty small, maybe 1-2 gallons? its not very big at all, when I said £10 I meant pretty cheap xD lol. But I would be willing to spend a bit extra for my gran and papa. I have brought all of my fish books to my gran and papas today and we are looking for a nice fish. I am off school unfortunetly because I am ill so I will be here all day. I may try cherry shrimp :) so my ideas are:

platies
cherry shrimp
MAYBE betta

only one of these, but its something for them to look at. I am planning on cleaning it today.

thank you for all the replies, I thought I sounded like a total idiot saying I wanted a tropical fish in a fish bowl xD lol

Pics hopefully today now

If its only 1-2 gallons I think only shrimp or MTS or pond snails would be appropriate. Maybe a betta if its 2 gallons or more.

ok I will check then :) it does 'look' big enough though
sort of going towards cherry shrimp now, how many could I get?
