I know fish bowls are frowned upon but...

I use something like this;

in my slightly over one gallon snail tank. Works pretty good, if you keep up with water changes. The cartridges are meant to be disposable but I cut a hole in the top so I could change out the media without buying more cartridges. The packaging says it's good for tanks up to five gallons but I wouldn't put it in anything bigger than a one or two gallon.

the problem with using a small hob filter is fitting it on the curved edge of your average bowl. straight edge on filter + curved edge on bowl does not work well.

i would try the smallest size of the hydro sponge filters. Sparkxx, i believe i listed the dimensions and gave you a link in one of your other threads.

yes, in my photo thread you did BFM. I cannot find on ebay though :( I hate the fact I do not have a Local pet shop that has a larger fish section, most only have tanks, fish, books and medication :( Isn't looking to good nowfor my plan, is it?

with a little ingenuity/time/materials you can make your own sponge filter. i'm sure there's at least one or two threads here on AC where people have done just that. try searching 'diy sponge filter' and see what you come up with :)

i would get a piece of hard tubing, about 1 inch inner diameter and tall enough that the bottom of the tube would sit on the bottom of the bowl and the top of the tube would be at least an inch under water. drill a whole bunch of holes in the bottom half of the hard tube, plug the bottom end of it somehow (glob of silicone, rubber plug, etc). get a chunk of sponge, cut it to your desired shape/size, and bore a hole down one end of the sponge and shove the holey end of the tube into it. airline and airstone down the top end of the tube. done.

If you're handy and can find a small submersible pump, like the kind sold for tabletop fountains, you can make a canister filter. That would give you the maximum amount of room inside, since all that goes in the tank are the intake and outake hoses. If you google "DIY canister filter" you should be able to find a number of tutorials, there are probably some on AC as well.

sounds very good BFM :) but for the airline and airstone, do I buy something that says both of these or do they some together? So sorry about this
