I know fish bowls are frowned upon but...

sounds very good BFM :) but for the airline and airstone, do I buy something that says both of these or do they some together? So sorry about this

looked at one tutorial and it seems much more complicated  lol

most lfs sell their airline tubing and airstones separately. you will also require a small air pump.

wow I posted this at the right time! tell me what happens mate :)
and the youtube vid looks good

EDIT: BFM I may try the canister oen first and then the sponge one :)

I like the HOB ;)

I hate to disagree, but I don't think that filter is going to work all that well, especially if you are going to use it "as is" and not modify it in any way.

The media it uses is all disposable, so when it comes time to throw away the carbon, floss and zeolite (ammonia remover) you will be starting all over with new media. I expect you will have another "mini cycle" when you do this.

Why don't you just get a sponge filter, as has been suggested? All you need to do is take off the sponge part and give it a gentle rinse and squeeze when it's dirty. It's extremely cheap, also:

In a bowl, the suction cup won't work, so it's just going to have to hang loosely and rest on the bottom. That should be fine.

You will need airline tubing with a check valve:

And an air pump:

Any pet store that sells fish supplies, should have an air pump, airline tubing and a check valve :)

Ok, I'm done looking on UK eBay...detecting that I am in the U.S., it keeps asking, via a pop up window, for me to enter my location every couple of minutes ;)

Oh, almost forgot! A heater. Hydor makes a bowl heater:
http://www.amazon.com/Hydor-HEATER-Aquarium-Heater-Watts/dp/B0006JLPFE

What is the ambient temperature of the room? You will need it to be at least 65°F/18°C (preferably warmer) for red cherry shrimp.

Definitely no fish in this bowl, please! Bettas are very much tropical fish, they need it warmer than platies. A betta really needs it 25-26°C, if you can't provide that sort of warmth it will be difficult to keep healthy, especially in that little water volume.

Besides, bettas eat shrimp ;)

It depends on what you're going to put in it and how warm the room it will be in stays; you may not need a heater. Such a small amout of water usually stays at room temperature fairly well.

Platytudes is right about the filter; they are meant to be disposable but you can do what I did and just cut a hole in the top of the cartridge so you can replace the media without disturbing the bacterial colony in the sponge. Takes a few minutes with a sharp knife and it's best done when it's dry so you're not dripping water all over everything. I've used it in a round container before and had no problems with the suction cups holding on to the sides. It takes a little maneuvering though.

Watching these things currently ;) thank platytudes

EDIT: Scotland alwasy has cold nights so I will get a heater just to make sure :) Ok no betta then ;) I just see them in such small things a lot, and same with playies I'm guessing?
