Jay's Planted 180g Tank.

Geez, if they are like our old "blue acaras" (aequidens pulcher... back in the day, 25-30 yrs ago) but yours are so different + so pretty! If they are anything like them, they were diggers + very regular breeders (every 30-ish days)....for your tanks sake I hope they're not the same...time will tell... Keep up your good work, JAY!

So far so good. The breeder I got these from said they were plant safe. The club member who originally introduced them had them in a planted tank so I'm hope full if not they'll be re-homed. Being that they are nice fish will probably make the later pretty easy who knows. Keep you posted if trouble does arise.

I think there may be more species of "acaras" than there used to be, is yours electric blue?

Yes these are EBA. If you have a docile community tank these are not the fish for you these guys are 6 little piggies going after everything in sight.

LOL. Jay! My "blue acaras" had much bigger heads compared to yours, yours are much "prettier" than mine ever were, look up aquidens pulcher on google...that's what we had, back in the day. Nice fish but not plant-happy diggers...Hopefully for you + your plants...they're not the same. I know the "electricity" of "blue cichlids" can add a "calmness" we never saw back then... be watchful.

Aquidens pulcher pics in a google search still show some very nice fish although they have a more define patterns rather than color. Many of the plants in this tank are well establish with plenty of roots but I'll be curious to observe such a behavior. Although that will definitely be a problem long term they would be quickly re-homed. I read somewhere or saw a youtube where when breeding they can become white which I'm curious to see for myself as well. =)

Well the foreground in this tank is in limbo may go without one for a while. I put the large piece of driftwood at more of an angle to see more of a profile from the front glass. There's some different stem plants that will need time to grow into the background behind it so well see if it makes out any better.

The Electric Blue Acara are starting to show signs for breeding cleaning a rocks, moving gravel, and strangely tugging on plants in that area like the nana petite and a kompact sword but they aren't able to rip them or cause any noticeable damage.

Saw a video where female turns white with black face after breeding. Let us know if yours does. Also, is there any sex differences to notice, like a rounder forehead on the male? Thanks & good luck!

They can make themselves darker or lighter turning more of grey on the top of their body. They are still young so I'm curious if they will turn a white color. Their fins seem to be slightly different but I'm not sure if it's a coincidence. It's pretty heavily planted so I only see their activity when they come into this corner but I'll report back if I see anything.

I couldn't tell which was which male or female until she was completely extended.
