Ill be ordering escargot shells soon, and i have some rock available...but not sure if it would be suitable, lava rock and base rock that used to be saltwater, dead coral rock. Would this rock be ok for my setup?
As long as it's all cleaned out of anything that may have been living at one point, the rock should be fine.
Agree the rock should be fine, clean it like Pappy said, Coral base rock is probably the best rock to use in a Tang tank its just to darn expensive for my taste, I use THR or creek rock..
yeh, its not the cheapest but ive had it for a bit already so figure id put it to good use since its there. Ordered a bunch of shells, more than ill need to start but it will give the shellies some choices and gonna be workin on cleaning some rock later today or tomorrow.
None of it is really "alive" currently, some is dry and some is in saltwater but not currently covered in critters so it shouldnt be too bad to clean.

The more shells, the better. Usually 2-3 per fish is sufficient but they'll hopefully end up breeding for you within no time so it is nice to have the extras in there right away.

Looked up the cyprichromis a little more, pics and videos...they seem like some awesome fish, im excited for those
