On that note, have you read the Silmarillion plant? I tried... just to give myself some background to the books but I found it way too difficult, it spends about three pages introducing a character, only to never mention them again for the rest of the entire book/novel/collection/whatever it is.
Yes, I tried reading the Silmarillion, too, Fungi. I think it does give good background information, but doesn't hold my attention long enough to make a good read. Like you said there are some underdeveloped characters and a lot of side notes. I suppose that's why it's not quite as popular as the other books. I would like to learn Elvish one of these days, though.

And thanks for the suggestions, Shoreliner. I agree that Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are fine actors. I don't mind books w/some misery and suffering, but I perfer those that don't leave you feeling gloomy.

One of my friend's mothers can speak rudimentary Elvish... it's scary that she went to the time and effort to learn it because there's no rules for grammar that Tolkein specifies, you just have to get a feel for the language and then base the grammar around the words, very odd.

LOL, I take it you were venting for being lynched? Or are you so averted to the conversation about Elvish?
