Hi just purchased a Marineland c-220 for my aquarium. This is my first cannister filter. I tried calling up their customer service, but i called too late. My filter has been running for 24hrs. It seems as if the impeller is rattling just a bit. I turned off the filter and pulled out the impeller and it looks fine. Restarted and it still rattles...not very loud but when i get close i can hear it. I thought these things were supposed to be like impeccably quiet. Any one with any experience on this filter. Also with my old power filter also a marineland, one time i stuck some marinland charcoal in a bag in the filter. I have never seen the water so clear. Well 24 hrs with new filter I still have that slight cloudiness. I have read that that people have crystal clear water within hours of running this filter. Am I just not being patient enough?
Any help will be appreciated

I think you're not being patient enough. I've had one of these running for 2 years on a 29g, and it's been great.
The rattle you're hearing is probably from air trapped in the filter. You can shake the canister gently to help dislodge the air, or just wait for it to work itself out. It will eventually. It also could be the bio-balls settling. Once they get seeded and filled with stuff, they settle down, IME. I know this rattle, and it does go away. Now, after two years, it's dead silent, for the most part.
You can use charcoal/carbon if you like. It's up to you.

Thanks I have been reading around And I am gonna shake it a little and see if that quiets itself out. As far as clarity in the water...i sure hope so! I really want that crystal clear water again! It looked amazing the 3 days it was clear like that

I shook the filter....many times. A LOT of air bubbles came out...but I still have the rattling noise. Any other advise?

do you have all unnecessary length of hose trimmed out?

yes i did cut down the length of the hose. I left the 2 in of slack as it suggested. It almost feels as if the flow isnt optimal. I have a powerhead on the undergravel filter that is rated at 160gph that seems to put out more flow than this thing. Also I am running my old power filter for a week until the cannister filter can reach the necessary bio load. I also have an undergravel filter. Is it unecessary to still run the power filter? I have a lot of gph right now! the cannister is 220 the power filter is 200 and the power head is 160 thats580gph! woah thats a lot on a 30..opinions?

Is the outlet of the c220 completely submerged? It needs to be...and then cycle the filter on and off 2-3 times with 30 second pauses in between. This helps the reverse flow siphon to fill the cannister and bleed the air back out.

I will have to give that a shot. Ive already shut it off twice but I took it apart each time. I will do what you said and turn of the power...wait 30 secs then do turn it on and repeat for 2 or 3times. Do you have one of these filters rbishop? What is your opinion on it? will it give me that crystal clear water I want?

Yes...I have several of the 160/220/360/530s and numerous Mag 350s and Hot 250s.

ensure the out let is completely submerged when yo do the cycling on and off. If you want to lower the level a bit later to increase surface agitation, that is fine.
