Do you have any assistance? You mentioned earlier knowing someone familiar with construction. Is it just the two of you building this fish barn?

That would suck. If you were my neighbor, I would definitely lend a hand. You could pay me with all the tanks you empty empty in to that pool.

:headbang2:have fun swimming in your house.

It's what I've always wanted; a tank large enough to swim with the fishes.

My housemate worked construction for his brother's company 1/2 of his adult life, so he's well-versed on building stuff. Having him available is going to make this very easy to do right.

The water pressure will make those seams incredibly tight. You're just going to need 3 people in there with you to work those folds as you slowly add water. That stuff is extremely flexible and wll lie tight and flat with all that water pressure on it.

Yep, just like filling a swimming pool, but worse. I'm going to have the folds all loosely done before I start adding water. Every 3" the folds will be pressed out and checked. At about 2-3', it's going to get pretty much impossible to move them.

Well, this absolutely blows monkey ****! The glass my friend has is tempered and for that very reason I'm not going to use it. He has it in his tanks with no problems. I'm the bad luck master and it would be just my luck that it would implode and send 3500 gallons of water into my dining room, kitchen, and the rest of the downstairs of my house. He told me that he can get 4'x8'x2" acrylic cheap, but until I can confirm the price is around what he told me I'm not moving forward. It would be pointless to get the tank built and the viewing window not be obtainable.

What's wrong with tempered glass? Some manufacturers use it for the bottom panel of all-glass tanks because it is stronger. Age is more of a concern; if the glass is 25 years old I wouldn't use it in any case...

That's kind of what I was thinking.

this is a truly great thread, so u do plan on having a water bill that is higher then all the people on your street put together lol

The pieces he has are 36x72. The length of the viewing wall is 136 (11'4"). Tempered glass can't be cut, so I can't cut them down to 5' each to make 10' of viewing window. The max inside of the tank is 144, so even if I didn't care about one window not being the same length as the other, I couldn't fit them side by side. I think it would look stupid with the windows not the same size and not on center. I put in a quote request to an acrylic company to see what their price is on 1.5" or 2" 48x96 and 48x120 sheets.

The other thing with tempered vs. plate is that tempered shatters into hundreds of pieces whereas plate will crack and still hold to a degree.

The water bill isn't a concern. Filling up a 24'x4' swimming pool is 13,600 gallons. That's a water bill.
