My boyfriend says.......

hmm... i have found over the years that many people do change water way more than is really necessary. It does no harm, so no big deal... but a monthly change of 25-50% is fine for an established tank.

No need for people to feel guilty if they don't do weekly 50% wc... ;)

Depends on your stocking levels. ;) Most people do 50% weekly WCs because they 4 times too many fish.

A little more important for my tank than some because I keep discus... but I'll likely be finding them a new home in the next little while. (had a few posts about it a while back, haven't had much time to put towards finding them a home of late)

I'd agree that some people go a bit overboard, like if one was doing 80% weekly changes on a lightly-stocked tetra tank, but hey, more power to 'em. A little excessive on the water changes is better for the fish than a lack of sufficient water changes.

(also agree about the OS tanks... but hey, to each their own, right? as long as the fish are healthy and happy, that's all we can really strive to provide)

I am not going to tell you to ditch the guy. That part is up to you.
I am one of the people that don't do weekly water changes on all my tanks. I tend to do about 30% every 2 weeks on most tanks. All of my tanks are very understocked by most people's way of looking at things. I think the inch per gallon guidance is a bit liberal but can be maintained if you are willing to do all the extra work involved. My fish thrive in low populations and fewer water changes.
Only my endler tanks get much more in water changes because they won't slow down breeding until they get to about 2 inches per gallon and they won't listen to me about controlling their numbers. I keep a dozen ameca splendens in a 45 long, 10 zenotoca eisenii in a 29, 6 heterandria formosa with 6 pygmy cories in a 10, 8 xenotaenia resolanae in a 40 breeder, 2 cories, a guppy male and 3 mystery snails in another 10 and a lightly populated 120 community tank. These don't seem to need the weekly changes but the endler tanks do.

Water changes and the frequency(aka maintenance schedule) is based on the stocking of the tank.

ie: heavily stocked tanks need larger or more frequent water changes. some tanks need more water changes due to the sensitivity of the stock .example: Discus.

but in general.. frequent water changes when done correctly will not hurt anything.

:iagree: also i find that regular wcs come in handy when there is an emergency or something and i cant do a wc that week or the next week, yi have no worries because i know i keep up with them religiously. in the wild fish constantly have fresh water...thats why i try to give them as much fresh water as possible.
