My home was broken into!

Flyingfish, I'm sorry as well. I really hope you'll be able to get your jewelry back. I know it's not the same either but my purse was stolen once and I never realized until that moment how violated a person feels when someone steals from them. Luckily, my purse was actually returned to me about a month later so maybe some of your stuff will turn up.

That's absolutely dreadful - especially considering how they entered. And, like others, it isn't the same, but this past summer someone broke into BOTH my car and my husbands and stole both stereos. My husband had stupidly left his wallet in his car (which I always yell at him for) and we had to cancel all of our credit cards and debit cards. The doors were locked and the alarm was on, but they got around it. It just felt gross to even get in the car after that, for several weeks.

I'm really sorry you lost important, sentimental things, too. I second the idea of getting a good fireproof lockbox, new locks, and heavy duty window latches.

Also, if you can, watch the show "It Takes A Thief". It talks about how your home is vulnerable and them shows ways you can fix the problems. I've learned a fair amount from it.

Now, you can order/buy/find/print clear window adhesive stickers that come with Alarm Systems. Sure it's a bluff without the alarm, but even just the signs (for those who don't have an alarm) have been shown to deter theives from breaking in. Most idiots are looking for easy targets and that may help. They would need to be prominently placed and look new and not like they've been there for 20 years. Also, they make little signs like a miniature stop sign that you can put near your front door saying you have an alarm.

Also, if you have a sliding glass door, chop off the end of a broomstick so that it will fit in the groove of the door. Most sliding glass door locks are pretty lame.

Sorry:( But remember, your most important valuables (being you and your family) are all fine and accounted for. And yah, I gotta say it, too: Good job being careful upon coming home to that!!

I'm so sorry to hear it too, FFish... I can understand your frustration as well as the fear that comes with it and the frustration because of that fear. I wish you the best.....

(OG, I remember when your place was hit.... actually it doesn't even feels like it was 2 years, feels like last year..... I think in your post though, you meant to say 3-4 houses down the road, not 3-4 hours ;) )

I'm so sorry to hear that!
Just a week ago, actually... I came home from school and saw that there were 2 lights on, one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom (I live in an apartment). I normally shut off all lights before I leave in the morning, but I thought I must have left them on so I brushed it off... The very next day I purposely made sure the lights were ALL off when I left. Came home later and the kitchen light was on. Doors and windows all locked. Nothing looked like it was missing. I called my mom so I could have someone on the phone with me while I checked the rooms and closets, no one was here. I called my boyfriend and he had not been home all day, so he got in contact with the Landlord. Our landlord told us the previous resident of the building was 'shady', and to change our locks because they had not been changed since we moved in..... I'm glad nothing (so far) was taken... but just the thought of someone being in here really gets to you....

I hope you can find your cherished belongings :)

Wow, thanks for all the support guys. :) I'm sorry that so many of us have been victims this way. Leopardess I actually remember when you told us about that happening to you, I really felt for you then, and even more so now! I appreciate all the advice, but actually we already had all that except the bolted down lockbox. The burgler just completely smashed the glass. One positive, I actually keep finding jewelry that I took off at odd times and had put in my makeup bag, or in my daughter's room etc.

On the husband thing, I'm trying to forget that he's the one who insisted on taking the heavy duty screen off her window earlier last year.

Ems--you should turn the reciept for the lock change in to the landlord, and reduce your next month's payment by that amount. IMO, that's something he should take care of, rather than exposing you to the threat and cost.

that was gonna be my question too, OG... hehehe, we're on the same page today..... Ems, I would totally get the reimbursement from the landlord after replaing the locks. You should in no way be held accountable for that, I'm actually kinda surprised the landlord asked YOU to do it....

Ems - That's terrible. Especially if he knew the other guy was "shady". If it were me, he'd definitely be paying up for new locks! I'd go buy some really nice $ ones and give him the bill, rather than letting him pick some cheapo locks.

And FF - Did you find that the cops cared at all? I know a house is a wayyy bigger deal (and far more scarey) but when our car was broken into she didn't even care. It was as if it was to be expected and accepted. I know they're busy and all....but when I say she didn't care...I really mean she didn't care an ounce!

And do you think it's possible it was anyone you know? Breaking a window is pretty ballsy...most people would rather find an unlocked door/open gate than break a window because it is so noisy.

Thanks ladies!
He lives an hour or so away and we will definitely be sending him the bill! We just wanted it done as soon as possible and didn't want to wait for him to do it. I didn't even want to be inside until they were changed.

And yes... it is a VERY good lock ;)
