My New Stendker Discus Have Arrived!

Well I gave you guys a break yesterday from me rambling on about my discus.....not because I wanted to, but because my daughter decided we needed to go to the emergency room for stitches. She is fine. Anyway, all of the discus are still out doing what discus do. There is some pushing now though. Surprisingly to me, is it is the smallest of them all doing the pushing.....and winning. Fortunately for the losers, I spread the food at both ends of the tank, so they just go foraging away from the "bully". I find it funny that the littlest one is the one saying....Hey, this is mine!!

Question: Regarding their color, at about what size do they really color up? Thanks a bunch.

Glad your daughter is ok!!!
Coloring up has a lot to do with genetics and type of discus. You should see a big difference in colors somewhere between 6-9 months, but still not fully colored for some until close to a year. To me it seems the turqs and snakeskins always seem to color up faster than blue diamonds and blue cobalt type of fish. Each month that goes by you'll see more and more color in the top and bottom fins, then the body.

The smallest ones seem to be the fiestiest most times. Pushing, bumping, trying to intimidate the others....all part of the kids growing up phase. They are much more boisterous as juvies! Fun to watch!

I agree, they REALLY, REALLY like bloodworms. I feed mine BW's every day. But not until after they get a flake and pellet feeding a few hours earlier, don't want to spoil them too much. I have 2 blue cobalts that will not touch flake or pellets. Only FBW and live white worms.

This is their second meal of the day. They had spyro flake earlier and everyone ate. They eat everything, they just go goofy for the blood worms....By the way, once it cools off, I would like some white worm culture....if you can walk me through how to keep them.

Sure thing! They're easy. They will go goofy for them!!

wow stunning colors already,i bet they'll color up a little more when they get used to thier new home

Just a quick update. They seem to have grown quite a bit and are eating like little pigs. I must be giving plenty of food though because even though I am vaccing every day, my trumpet snails have exploded. I guess I am going to have to get some of them out. 5 of the 7 are at least 3" now and the other 2 aren't too far behind. Not bad in 2 weeks.

For those of you thinking about young discus in a planted tank....if you do it, plan on ALOT of gravel vaccing and try to get plants that are either attached to something or not easily uprooted. It is very labor intensive to get the bottom clean with substrate and plants in the tank.
