Well, like many things, "play sand" is local. I absolutely hated play sand available to me at my last location. Dirty & compacting...not good, & I removed it in less than a month...I like the mixed color of yours, NoodleCats, but I'll be reluctant to try it again...ever, ever again!

Gotta rinse super super well and run filter floss for awhile with new sand, and stir it gently every couple weeks to prevent the compaction

I just switched to play sand for my tanks and haven’t found any of the issues you’re describing either :) I think you just had bad luck in your area!!

Ive found it better than gravel. I hate gravel, traps so much debris and becomes a nitrate factory over time, even with thorough vacuuming. Its more maintenance than sand IME. So for me, I'm happy to never go back to gravel, though I dont mind mixing it with sand provided its rounded so it doesn't affect my bottom dwellers either.

Betta tanks!
Added some crypt parva to the shallow 4g, hoping it'll form a small carpet around the rocks

The 5g got a moss trim

Got some Brazilian pennywort and some echinodorus quadricostatus for the SA biotope. This tank is also now run on a canister filter as well as the sponge filter.

Big update, some big changes, some not too much.

We lost a lot of our nanos, the 20g nano tank is no more. Our tap water pH changed without warning and wiped out all of the fish except 3 pygmy cories who have been moved in with our big cories now. The sparkling gouramis are fine, they were moved to another tank before this happened.

We also lost Cheriko the betta, not 100% sure what happened. Bloated and weak one day, gone a few days after, despite treatment.

We also replaced our 20 gallon tall with a 20 gallon long for our loaches and dwarf gourami.

So here are the tanks:

That's an excellent jobNoodle, sorry to hear about your losses, sometimes it just happens. I love the 10G tank, simple plants but very well distributed, what are you using to light it? I love how it looks, everything is well distributed, there is an order in the disorder of its natural decorative elements.
