does anybody else keep wild-caught native fish in a tank? i've noticed most people here have "aquarium fish", but i haven't seen many posts about native fish.

all i have are native fish, and i dont ever plan on buying a living organism to put in a tank, fish, plant, or invertebrate. i catch everything thats in my tanks myself. its really fun!

What kind of natives do you have?..

I guess it depends on where you are at and your other interests... I am in New Jersey, and none of the natives I have read about really peaked my interest. I have seen some nice looking North American natives online- bluenosed shiners are my favorite. Red belly dace had some nice coloration, and I like h. formosa for their size. If I had dwarf crayfish near me, they would probably be in my tanks by now.

Someone I know has some NJ natives, and there was one species they collected that just died out in their tank. A type of perch, I think.

i had bluegill and a bass in 1 of my tanks a couple of years ago. it was pretty rough. the were very dirty fish. i had to clean the tank everyday. i wont go that route again

I used to have a Gambusia affinis tank courtesy of the creek by my house. One of the fry, a female, ended up with a big blue tail with black spots like a fancy guppy. Don't know where that came from but it was cool.

I live in Jersey too. I really want a small/large mouth bass tank, but i'm assuming they would need a fairly large tank. I wouldn't mind having a sunfish tank though. That would be pretty cool.

currently in my 55 gallon tank i have:

4 golden shiners
2 eastern mudminnows
2 creek chubsuckers
1 pumpkinseed sunfish
1 bluegill sunfish
and 1 devil crawfish

i plan on getting 3 more pumpkinseeds then i'll be done.

all caught from the creek behind my house.

i'm currently setting up a 5 gallon tank, and i'm not sure what i'm putting in it, but probably just one mudminnow.
