Native Tank?

I have kept native fish and inverts for the past five years. Living in south Louisiana and near the Atchafalaya River, I always carry a 5 gal minnow bucket w/ aerator and a dip net in my work truck. I do service work and travel all over the state so I get to sample different areas. I have kept bluegill, small bass, catfishes, various minnows, darters, banded pygmi sunfish, pirate perch, river shrimp. One spring I dipped up a small pipefish and a small flounder. both were caught in freshwater but didn't live long in a tank. we also like to sample the crawfish from different areas. I currently have some crays in a grow out tank to see what they turn out to be. They appeared to be dwarf cajun but the claws are long and have a tubular look.

I was planning to start one up for the spring, but some things came up with my tanks, and now I don't have any extra tanks or space. But maybe that will change by spring or summer.

I wanted to do a minnow and darter tank, maybe a crayfish, or anything else I could catch. I was going to do all native plants as well. I always admired native tanks, and always wanted at least one, but as of right now, I'll have to wait.

haha wow i forgot all about this thread!

i've switched to an all sunfish tank now.

i still have the original pumpkinseed and bluegill, and i have another pumpkinseed and a redbreast now. i'm lovin it!

Probably the ditch fencing crays (Faxonella clypeata) but this is just an off-the-cuff guess and shame on me for making such a guess! But I can't resist and it is a native species. LA has soooo many crays that I may need to make a road trip for some more natives.....crays that is!

I made the switch to a native tank a few months ago as well. Its so much more interesting to go catch your own pets than buying them at the store. I've got 5 green sunfish, two red-breasts, a blue gill and a yellow perch

All my fish are native...

... to somewhere!

;)

I do admire the native approach- but I'm limited by space and money how many aquariums I can set up- If I had unlimited space and funds- I would like to try my hand at natives.

N.A. natives aren't all big bruisers; plenty of natives do fine in 10 gallon or even smaller tanks. Pygmy sunfish and some of the smaller killies and darters are great for planted pico tanks.

i know right! its awesome to know that you personally caught every fish you own. i caught all of my fish and my crayfish, and collected my own driftwood.
