I did the same as you, came for MSc stayed for PhD at strathclyde but not with anything related to fishes ! I'll check out his work, although I bet it might be a bit over my head. Thanks for your thoughts otherwise. I wanted to try to check the same things as the aquarium shop did, although I don't really understand why he didn't check for NH3/4. Either way, I'll get a wee kit for the ammonia/um.
Fish are still doing very well but I'll keep an eye on them. One had a swollen belly but a couple of peas and he must have shat it out because it looks back to normal.
