New 30 gallon planted tank build.

I have 2 fixtures on my tank that come out to 57 watts total. I leave the lights on about 8 hours a day. I have 2 aquaclear 30s. I am dosing regular flourish and api co2 booster daily. I feed flakes every day and I put an algae wafer in every other day. I also feed frozen brine every Monday, so once a week.

First on the API CO2 Booster, this is much the same as Excel; both are glutaraldhyde and water. I personally would not use this stuff, up to you.

To the algae...I read back and may have misunderstood something. Is this just in the filter tubes? Or is this brush algae actually increasing on plant leaves in the aquarium?

Both, lol. On plants and filter tubes

OK. The algae on filter tubes I never bother with, I just clean it off/out when I clean the canister filter. This is very common, brush algae on the filter tubes I mean. On plant leaves, if it is increasing, is more serious.

I don't have anywhere near sufficient info on your setup to offer much, but I can say with certainty that it is a balance issue. Dosing Flourish Comprehensive every day is a lot...once or twice a week is all they recommend. This is meant for natural or low-tech systems. Your light I am not certain of; if it is T5 or T8, the length of the tubes, and the tank size all factor in.

It's a problem on the tubes also when it's clogging them. I don't know who "they" is, but on the seachem bottle it says to dose daily. I appreciate your help, but you're obviously not asking for the information you need or you would have gotten it already.

Re the dose, you are probably thinking of the Excel, being daily; I have never used this so I don't know what they (and yes, they means Seachem) recommend. But on the Flourish Comprehensive Supplement, is suggest 10ml for every 500 liters once or twice weekly.

I've never had brush algae actually clog the filter tubes; occasionally the small holes on the spraybar come close, but I remove them maybe every 3-4 months and use a little brush inside to clear them.

To work out the issue with problematic algae on the plants, one needs to know the tank size, lighting specs (tube type, kelvin, wattage, length, number), duration, fish feeding, water changes, tap water params, plant species, and fertilization. All these factors are inter-related and have to be balanced. When the balance between light intensity and nutrients is reached, and if it is just sufficient for the plant species, algae hasn't much of a chance. But when one factor is missing, the often-cited "law of minimum" applies, and plant photosynthesis slows and may stop altogether. This is when algae takes the advantage.

Usually the issue is too much light intensity, along with or perhaps just the duration. But it again all depends upon what is in the tank and what nutrients are entering it. But most times, reducing the light does resolve or help to resolve things. As an example of how delicate this balance can be, I used to see brush algae increasing during the summer, and it took me a couple of years to realize it was due to the increased intensity and duration of daylight entering through the windows. I now have blinds and heavy drapes over the windows all summer (I have a dedicated fish room so this is easy to deal with) and for the last three summers, no increase of algae at all.

Well you were right. I misread the dosing instructions and that's probably where my problem started. As of right now though the black hair algae is dying and my plants are responding really well to the excel. Greener and brighter and I've noticed a tremendous amount of growth for the amount of time I have been using excel. There is barely any algae left. Thanks for your input. I'm glad we got to the the bottom of the problem before this became a serious problem. I'm also going to stop dosing the flourish comprehensive supplement for about a week to a week and a half since I've been dosing it daily and let the plants absorb everything that's in there. What do you think about continuing the flourish iron for a couple more days though? Maybe just like two more days? I do see signs of iron deficiency in my anubias, but not in my swords.

Water changes will get the water back to a more reasonable state.

By "iron deficiency," what exactly do you mean? Any chance of a photo? Iron is only a micronutrient to aquatic plants, and if you have been dosing iron as well as the Comprehensive there should not be any iron shortages, quite the opposite. Iron is a heavy metal and thus highly toxic in excess, and plants can only take up so much excess iron.

I don't have a picture right now because I'm at work, but the leaves are only bright green in some areas and then completely clear in others. The Google search that I did led towards iron deficiency. I'll post a picture when I get home.

It is very difficult for me to see the leaves...any chance you could post a photo closer to one of the affected leaves? I can see some yellowing in general, which is probably chlorosis and this is caused by a lack of chlorophyll, and that occurs when the plant cannot produce it due to a deficiency of one of several possible nutrients.
