New 30gal setup

Thanks for the info JoJo. I'll give it a try when I get home tonight.

Meaty, I could give you what I paid, but most of it wouldn't be helpful to you. With a 55gal tank, everything you would need would be bigger than what I purchased. My suggestion would be to look at what I have listed and then check the prices on the next step up. That would give you a better idea of what you would spend.

Yea your right, thats what ill do then. Thanks and I love your tank

Thanks for the compliment.

I really want livestock, but if I have learned nothing else on these forums, it is to be patient. It seems that everyone that rushes into a set up ends up having trouble down the line.

Here is an update for the night.

First of all, the water stats.
Ammonia 0.50
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Gravity 1.0245
PH 8.4

I'm worried cause there doesn't seem to be any increase in ammonia. My partner has requested that I not throw a shrimp in there since we don't have a canopy or anything to contain the smell. Should I be adding ammonia to the tank or just let nature take it course?

I also have an update on the aiptasia outbreak. What I thought was just one was wrong. I found three of the little fellas in the tank. Two on one rock and a third on another. We purchased a syringe (with needle) for a quarter at the local drug store. It required my partner showing his arms and hands to the pharmacist and he said the doc still wasn't happy with the reason for the syringe, but sold it anyway. HeeHee I heated up some water until boiling and I went in for the kill. The first one shrivled up and disappeard, so did the second one (I had not found the third one yet). I claimed VICTORY and cleaned up the syringe and put it away. I went to the tank and looked inside. The first little bugger was back...and I swear he was taunting me. At this point I wasn't feeling sorry for killing them and I went to try some lemon juice. None in the house, but I did have a bottle of concentrated lime juice. I mixed equal parts lime juice and water and boiled it. I filled the syringe and went in for the next wave of attacks. I snuck up behind him and slowly started pressing in the plunger on the syringe. He perked up and suddenly the water was filled with a milky looking puff and he was gone. Just like that. It was amazing. No shriveling, no pulling back into the rock, just POOF!

Here are a couple pics of before and after. The lime juice also worked on the third one I found. THe second one hasn't reared his head so maybe the boiling water worked on him cause he was much smaller.

After (looks who is missing! WOOHOO!)

The picture is of the Tonga branch in the tank center. It appears to be growing some hair that has me worried. From my tests, I'm guessing the end of the cycle is a good bit from being done. What should I do with this algae? It is noticeably longer in just 24 hours.

Ok, that is it for the update tonight. Thanks for any comments or suggestions you can give me, and I hope my experiences can help someone else that is just starting their first tank.

Hey Grins. Yep, I'm using premixed water from a LFS. I tested the water I had leftover and it all came back perfect zeros across the board and the gravity was perfect. I don't kinow what is going on. I'm probably just not patient enough. I know the rock was already well cured. Perhaps that is the problem?

The hair algea can be a phosphate problem that is why I asked. Also nutrient based from overfeeding but with your tank being so new I'm thinking you might just need to tough it out until you can get a cleaner crew in there. If it really bothers you, try pulling it.

I'm thinking I'll let it go unless it really gets bad. At least my clean up crew will come into a big buffet!

ARGH!! One pest at a time please. I havne't seen any bubble algae, but thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out for it.
