New 30gal setup

You gotta love Diatoms.. I thought my tank was going to be permanently brown...

I have to agree with you. My partner just let me know that the tank is even worse this afternoon. I didn't think it could get worse, but I guess I was wrong.

He did some tests when he got home and here is where we stand currently...

Ammonia .50
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20
PH 8.4

Never had a big spike in ammonia unless it just hasn't happened yet. Nitrates are going up so that is a good thing right? You think I should throw some fish food in the tank to boost the bio load a bit? My first purchase will be a few members of the clean up crew, probably a crab (emerald), some snails Nassarius) and I'm gonna try a peppermint shrimp since I continue to have the problems with the glass anemone. I should be able to introduce them as soon as the Ammonia hits 0 and the Nitrates drop correct?

When both your ammonia and nitrites are 0 you can peform a huge water change (larger than you normally will be doing for maintenance) and then add your inverts.

Thanks for the advice! I just keep doing my testing and watching the algae grow. LOL

I found a couple more hitchhikers tonight. I wasn't able to get a picture, but I definitely saw at lest two bristleworms. They would stick their head out and then dissapear. They were very small. I need to get a red light so I can see if anything else shows up at night.

Thanks Simple. I'm loving it even with out fish and corals. I'm hoping it will finish cycling this week. It seems to be moving quickly along. I don't think I had much die off from the live rock which would explain the lack of a huge ammonia spike.

As for feeding the tank for ammonia, would it be safe to put some freshwater fish food in the tank or should I stick to stuff strictly made for saltwater?

Here is the latest update. Last night around midnight I decided to do a few water tests. Test them again this morning and this evening and came up with the same results.

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 20

Would it be safe to do my large water change and introduce a few snails and maybe a hermit or two?

Yep sounds like your cycle is over to me!!
