New 30gal setup

Hey great start man but small and INEXPENSIVE are two words that don't rally go good with this hobby. Are you using anything else to cycle.

I haven't given an update in a bit so here is where we currently stand with the tank.

Ammonia - 0
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - 20
Gravity - 1.024
Temp 78.3

My tank is slowly being overcome with hair algae. The four snails and two crabs (who now have 5 shells to choose from should they want) are doing their job, but the algae is growing faster than they can eat it. At least I don't have to worry about them starving.

To battle the hair algae I did a 20% water change tonight and I'll do another tomorrow. I have also turned off the lights. I'm hoping that with the lights off for a couple days and the water changes I can get the nitrates down and the algae under control. I sure do miss looking in my tank though. It is amazing how quickly that algae grows.

I mentioned earlier in the week that I think I have a couple bristleworms enjoying the tank. Here is a picture of one of them. He'll peek his head out and moving around and then goes right back into his hole.

I have also noticed some other things that appear to be growing (hope the lights out won't hurt them for a few days). I'm not sure what they are and I haven't been able to get a good picture of them cause the hair algae is near them and gets in the way. I may try tomorrow night to get a picture. They look like little holly leaves and appear to be branching. They are growing fairly quickly.

Well that is it for now. I'll keep you posted on how my battle with the algae is going.

your plan of attack sounds ok to me....it will all depend on how quick the hair algae grows back....maybe up the level of crab in there if the lights and water change does not rectify it..

Great bristle worm.....lol

Since my water parameters remain acceptable (well, I would like the nitrates lower, but I just can't get them below 20, even with water changes), when do you think it would be safe to invest in my first fish?

Should I wait for the hair algae to get under control? My partner is itching for his clown fish (it was his only request if I got a tank) and I would like to get one.

If safe to put a clown in now, would it be ok to also introduce a few more snails at the same time or am I pushing my bioload?
