New to this all starting out with a 2.5 gallon betta aquarium. help is appreciated!!

might want to get a hood and light for the tank or atleast something to put over the tank. you dont want to wake up with a dead betta. also make sure you didnt put the rhizome from the java fern in the substrate. the rhizome is the part where the leaves come out and needs to be above the substrate or between two rocks or tied to a rock.

thx nerdyrcdiver. I actually take alot of joy from caring for her. i check on her when i get back from class, feed her, and been doing water changes at night. Being a Chem major doesn't exactly make my life stress free. But have her around has done wonders for my anxiety. i grew up having a large saltwater tank in our home, and Ive had bettas before, they lasted 3-4 years in their small bowls. But being a kid i didn't know any better. I'm hoping to one day have a whole room in my house devoted to fish and tanks. But for now being a college student comes first and it seem taking care of her will be easy once the tank is cycled. Im looking to get a 10 gallon tank when they go on sale. the girl at petsmart told me it would be soon and they will get a lot of stock in. maybe start up a second tank at that point and cycle it right. Get a few tropical fish and put it in the living room. my roommate said he would be down to split costs so this could work nicely. either way im still focused on taking care of Elsie and i will definitely be sticking around.

I too take pride in taking care of my tanks. But I get scared s###less when I have to take care of my neighbors HUGE saltwater tank. I think it is around 150g.

Honestly if you are going to get a bigger tank for the livingroom, spend the little extra money and get a 20 or a 29g. I think the 29 is the same size as a 20 long but it is taller. Dont get me wrong, I love my 10g but there are very limited stocking options for them considering most fish other than bettas like to school or at least have a couple friends. Only 2 downsides are, larger water changes and it is a larger size. But I think it would pay off in the end. I know my cousins room mate had a big fish tank and I have no idea how he managed it with classes and if it was even supposed to be allowed. But apparently they had some pretty big fish that ate feeder fish.

i have a glass cover for it with acces wholes for pumps and cords, i just always take pictures with it off because i think its kinda fugly, i do keep it on the rest of the time besides water changing and the rizohom is pinned between two rocks.

The Java fern will need some light, luckily this is the type of tank where a desk lamp will be plenty of illumination...even those LED ones might work. The idea is not to fry your betta with too much heat and make it uncomfortable with too much light, but get the plant to grow, since no plant will grow with simply ambient [indoor] light except for maybe Java moss.

desk lamp + any low watt CFL bulb that is 6,700K, (i get mine in 3 packs at safeway for about $9) = win

well i do have a desk lamp with a cfl bulb in it. i dont use it much on my desk so that could work nicely

make sure that the bulb is a 6,700k (spectrum of a grow bulb) so that the light is useable to the plants.

Oftentimes the K rating isn't clearly advertised or even stated on the packaging.

you're telling me, I've spent hours obsessing over it, but i do hate that...wrong light algae
