officially became vegetarian about a week ago!

coach_z. you said pretty much everything that came to me, except for NUTRITIONAL YEAST.
some people love it, some people hate it.
it's amazing.
high in protein and b complex vitamins, it's also low in fat and a great source of essential amino acids. and, i think, delicious.
here's a link to nutrition information.
i really support you in your efforts to not eat meat, or to even just become more conscious of what you put in your mouth and swallow.
the rainbow method to eating right is one of my favorites too. every color, how easy, and plenty of whole grains.
i LOVE barley, it's chewy and good. great for cold salads and warm soups.
quorn is a great brand for chicken replacement.
health aside, do it for the environment. which is the place that we all have to live by the way check this out.

A 2006 United Nations report found that the meat industry produces more greenhouse gases than all the SUVs, cars, trucks, planes, and ships in the world combined.2 Greenhouse gases cause global warming, which studies show will increasingly lead to catastrophic disasters—like droughts, floods, hurricanes, rising sea levels, and disease outbreaks—unless we drastically reduce the amounts emitted into the atmosphere.
Many conscientious people are trying to help reduce global warming by driving more fuel-efficient cars and using energy-saving light bulbs, but they could do more simply by going vegetarian.

  • The official handbook for the Live Earth concerts says that "refusing meat" is the "single most effective thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint."3
  • According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than a half-million cars off U.S. roads.
  • The University of Chicago reports that going vegan is 50% more effective than switching to a hybrid car in reducing greenhouse gas emissions."

there are some really scary statistics out there, like how much freshwater it takes to raise and process ONE pound of beef. crazy.
and scary.

there is A TON of specific information out there including recipes and tips. thank bejesus for the internet.

i am an omnivore.
but a conscientious omnivore.

personally, i refuse to stop eating meat just because some scientists and Al Gore have too much time on their hands to do something truly productive.

I just cannot be a herbivore as i find that now during the recession food prices are way too high to handle. And organically grown veggies is way too high for me.Oh and vitamin B groups supplement pills is super ex.Vitamin B groups is essential in making of haemoglobin.

Anyways if you are those eco friendly vegan cut off your lighting, computer usage,TV usage etc to be more effective.Use nylon(but is still using petroleum anyways) bags instead of plastic bags.I love to use those reusable nylon bags.Easy to carry and use.

I'm cool with people who don't eat meat even the pushy ones lol. I have to agree based on the size of some of the back sides I see at the mall,we the people need to show some selfcontrol and selfrespect.I do find it funny that only in rich nations do you find people doing things like not eating meat or do you have kids that can't eat penutbutter or drink milk. I don't hear the third world asking western nations to stop eat meat,I do hear them asking teach us how to grow food like you do. Just a thought

Hmm i observed that too.In the third world countries they usually ask to grow our own food, raise our own farm animals etc.I guess that people in these countries find it hard to get cash to buy all the luxurious veggies. We all here in South East Asia(the group of islands) will say its lucky that we have meat if not we all will be very poor and malnutritioned.I grew my own herbs such as the curry leaves and pandan leaves :)

I wouldn't blame your cold on going vegetarian. Do what you can to support your immune system---rest, vitamin C, echinacea---just like anyone else.

Most countries do consume less meat than the US. There may not be as many vegetarians---though I think there are a lot of vegetarians in India---but they do consume less meat overall. It is WAY easier to eat vegetarian at "ethnic" restaurants. Indian, Chinese, Thai, Mexican... in my experience, they all have more vegetarian options.

Also, vegetarian does NOT necessarily equal skinny! Everyone's body and metabolism is different. I actually GAINED a bit of weight when I became vegetarian. I am far from being a skinny person and I've been vegetarian for about 4 years. And no, not just a junk food vegetarian. I eat lots of rice and veggies and I generally don't have a sweet tooth. My one real pitfall is soda---can't stand the diet stuff---but even that is usually no more than about 5 cans or bottles per week.

My point is just that it really depends on your individual body and how it responds to a particular diet. Personally, I feel healthier and more energetic since I went veg. Find what works for you.

I think it would be accurate to say most countries eat less food than the US.

;)

it really is more about moderation.

we all learn what works for us if we stay in tune with our bodies.

I learned long ago that i feel better with a higher protein(meat) diet with certain veggies added in.

my wife on the other hand does better with less meat and more veggies.

Actually combinations of completely vegetarian foods will give the body the building blocks it needs to create every amino acid it needs.

A legume and a whole grain together provides just that.

Honestly if we ate the fruits and veggies recommended the reduction in oxidation would lower our protein needs because there isn't as much damage to repair.

Digestion of protein produces carcinogens, so a more plant based diet reduces the risk of colon cancer.

I never said you couldn't find the veggie foods with the proteins to derive the essential amino acids from...I simply said to make sure you check.

btw we cannot create essential amino acids. we find food sources to break down the proteins into amino acids.

it is much easier to find all the essential amino acids in meats.
