Okay... So I'm Doing Tangs...

As Jpap mantioned, J. Transcriptus would make a good addition, but I would allow the Occie colony to become established first. My Transcriptus was just as eager in trying to eat my Occies as my Calvus were. I would only add one Juli, as I'd hate to see the aggression level while breeding in this species. Not to mention you may lose a few trying to establish a pair.
ah... I see. dang it... I actually have access to an already proven pair too.

well... I suppose it is best to pass on them. I will let the occies establish before trying anything else. so, I could not get away with a much more timid fish that would occupy the open water, cyp-style (obviously, not meaning actual cyps, but maybe something smaller that would stay out of the occies way... some sort of rainbow, for instance)? just brainstorming, I guess. of course, if it boils down to needing to be species only, then so be it.

Preacox rainbows would work and i have actually used them in the past..

By all means, I don't want to sway you from trying it. Only to caution you that a lot of these species can be unpredictable from a behavior standpoint. Some Julis are okay, some are not. Just be aware that it can happen and take precautions such as adding the shellies first. Personally I am happy I added my Transcriptus when I did. This fish will take on Calvus twice it's size and really hates new additions. I've since added a Cylindricus of the same size, it's just now being accepted around the structure without too much harrassment 1 1/2 months later. That's not to say yours won't be naturally less aggressive. I plan on trying shellies again, but it will be an adult pair quarantined from the rest of the tank, so the fish can see them but not get to them. Once they have lost interest I'll remove the barrier.

well, I appreciate the advice... you should know I have decided not to put the julies in there though. I would like them, and maybe in the 55 with the others? but hey... if not, then I will simply have to do without. I won't kill fish just because I want them, you know? so, I will avoid the julies going in the 33 with the occies, maybe go with some praecox rainbows instead, and if you guys think I can maybe try the julies in with the altos, then I will try that instead. if not, then I will leave the julies be.

I think Julis will be fine with Calvus. Calvus have an ability to thwart attacks by bending out their sharp scales. It really works. Most fish just give up. I keep a Transcriptus with my Calvus, and while it pushes around my 2" female, it stays away from the larger males.

Yeah just a note on my 120gal Tang setup i have Adult 3 Lelupi, 5 Cylindricus, 2 Mustax, 2 Caudopunctatus, 5 Calvus and 3 Julido Dickfieldi.. every one is an adult except the the Calvus and in which case the others being mainly the Lelupi will try to punk my Calvus and they angle their bodies to the side to defend the nip or bite which usually works for them pretty comical to watch the Calvus do this..

Thanks afro i forgot about that trait of the Calvus..

so, does that trick work on each other? you know... calvus vs. calvus or calvus vs. comp, etc.?

btw... so far, so good... just posturing...

Yes it does. I haven't witnessed much aggression between my Calvus. When there is a dispute it usually comprises of several rapid attacks to the side of the fish. I've never seen them lock jaws as the victim will turn it's side and not line up face to face. I only keep 3 in a 75 gallon though, so there is plenty of territory for everyone. When my large male attempts to spawn with my female the other male always comes over to bump and grind with them. I don't know if this is normal or if I just have a very tolerant dominant male.

I would say yes rich_one mine did this at an early age as well..
