If I were banned for sticking up for hard working local fish stores that try to be good to their customers then this would be a sad place indeed...:headshake2:

the claim has been made that all stores that carry modified/coloured etc fish should be questioned in their business integrity and honesty, and, as an former LFS employee who worked hard to help people in this hobby, just like we are doing on these boards, I take offense to that.

anyone who worked hard at a LFS would.

i think a store that didn't sell died tattooed and painted would do very well because they would educate their customers and think of all the room they would have for real great fish.
now if you could just direct me to where i can acquire a jelly bean kitten i would be most grateful

From an animal rights PoV, I'm not bothered that "glofish" are modified, because the modification would have to be done while it was still in single cell egg form.

From a conservation stand point...possibly dangerous. They can breed, and danios are hardy little things, but does anyone know if the modified genes are recessive or dominant?

From the "playing God" standpoint. Unsure. I really don't want to end up in a world like "Gattaca", but on the other hand...I would prefer that a creature we basically created as a science experiment find a place and purpose (even if it is just as pets) instead of being destroyed.

Yes, all "pigeon blood" varieties of Discus came from a single fish with a dominant mutation. This is technically natural, but exploited by animal husbandry to create all the different pigeon blood variations we have today.

Add bettas, guppies, goldfish, alot of cichlids, and probably a million others that I'm forgetting to the list of fish that we've tinkered with. It really does make it hard to decide how much tampering is too much.

Personally, the glo-fish don't bother me; I wouldn't purchase them, just because I don't like the way they look + I don't own a tank that they wouldn't get eaten in. That being said, since they aren't hurting or struggling just to survive it's fine that they exist.

one good thing is that here in ontario, Glofish are illegal to sell.

Yeah, they look so un-natural that if I ever got any I would be inspired to build a special species only tank for them. Make it look like a computer mod, with fishes!
