Um... "gage" is a word. As in "something thrown down to start a battle," perhaps a battle revolving around the correct spelling of "gauge."
Inka is correct, however. I work with machinists all of the time, and it is VERY common to see the word incorrectly spelled in their trade magazines, and they use the darned things all of the time. (Unless, of course, all of the machinists are throwing down gauntlets in the middle of their shops...)
